Señora Coon is a graduate of The Ohio State University and José
Ortega y Gassett Foundation in Toledo, Spain with a B.S. degree in
International Business and a minor in Spanish. She has worked for
YMCA International in Spain and most recently for the Steamboat Ski &
Resort Corporation and has traveled extensively throughout Mexico,
Central and South America. This is her fourth year with the Steamboat
Springs School District teaching Spanish to third, fourth, and fifth grade
students at both Strawberry Park and Soda Creek Elementary Schools.
Señora Coon is married and has three boys, Jack, William and Lucas
and has lived in Steamboat since 1991. She brings energy and
enthusiasm to her class room and loves her job.
Currently the elementary foreign language program in the Steamboat
Springs School District is an exploratory FLES program that will focus
on the development of listening and speaking skills and on cultural
awareness and diversity. Grammar is learned indirectly and we follow a
natural sequence of language learning: understanding, speaking,
reading, and writing. Instructional techniques appropriate for elementary
age children have been developed; physical activity and concrete
experiences play an important role. Visuals, manipulatives, and realia
are also an important part of class time and a typical lesson plan
includes songs, rhymes, games and role playing. We also have a lot of
fun while learning Spanish!
