Attendance

It is very important that every child come to school
every day that he or she is well. (We certainly do not want them
to come to school if they are sick.) Now is the time to establish
the importance of regular school attendance. Please be sure that
children are here and ready to enter the classroom at 8:55. After
9:00 students will be marked tardy and must be signed in at the
office. Late students take time from the whole class and we
really dont want to miss a moment of Kindergarten!!

Arrivals and Departures

Adults are on the playground for supervision beginning at
8:40.
You may leave children to play and they will line up to enter the
class at 8:55.
Kindergarteners enter through the doors in the childrens garden.
If you know in advance that your child will be out, please notify
us in writing or email. If there is an unexpected absence, please
call the school office that morning.
You are urged to pick up your child on time. If you know you are
going to be late, please notify us at 303-756-0392 so that we can
reassure your child.
Consistent late pick-ups without valid cause will be referred to
Social Services.
Kindergarteners are dismissed at 11:40 and 3:40 out the doors
facing Peach Street. We will walk them all the way down to the
sidewalk by the brick wall and expect them to tell us when they
are leaving and with whom.
Please be careful at 3:40. It is very crowded and parking can be
difficult. We do not want to see children running through traffic
to get to you. We will have them wait for you to come get them.
Please let us know in writing if you wish for your child to ride
a bus home. If you let us know, we will be sure that he gets on
the right bus! The bus driver will not let them off unless there
is someone at the bus stop to get them.

Changes

If there are any changes in the Kindergarten or DPS
schedule we will let you know as soon as possible.
If there are any changes in your address or phone number at home
or at work, please let us know immediately. It is important that
we be able to reach you during the day in case of emergencies.
If you have arranged for someone different to pick up your child
after school, please let us know in writing. You can send a note
with your child that day. We dont want to lose any children!!

Medications

Any medicines that children might need to take during the year
must be kept i0n the office. They must be in the original
containers and accompanied by a doctor's letter or prescription.
This applies to both prescription and over the counter medicines.

Clothing

Clothing
We will take the children outside for a few minutes every day
unless it is raining or snowing. Daily outdoor activities are
part the Kindergarten curriculum. Please make sure that they are
dressed appropriately for the weather. Sunscreen is a good idea.
Each child should have a change of underwear and pants in his
backpack every day. Children accasionally become so involved in
kindergarten activities that they just forget to go!
Tennis shoes are best for running and climbing on the playground.
Slip-on shoes and flip-flops are not a good choice for active
students and heels are dangerous on the playground. It is not
safe to be barefoot inside or outside the school.
Please have names clearly printed on; coats, hats, mittens,
books, backpacks, and anything else that your child brings to
school.
Names should be in books the children bring to share with the
class. Please do not allow your child bring toys to school. We
have plenty in the classroom!

Lunch

Lunch
Lunch is at 12:00. We will not stop for a snack during
the morning, so children will need to eat a good breakfast! A
childs lunch costs $1.40.
Milk alone to accompany lunch from home is $.40. If you want your
child to have hot lunch it is best to send a check to the
lunchroom. They will keep an account for each child. Students are
assigned a lunch account number. As soon as we have these we will
send them to you so that you can help your child memorize his
number.Your child will have a barcoded lunch card to access his
account for lunch or milk when needed. We will keep these at
school.
Sometimes the lunchroom needs to change the menu. If your child
is an especially picky eater, you may want to plan cold lunches.
Please do not send anything that needs to be warmed. There is no
microwave available for student lunches. Our paraprofessionals
make every effort to make sure each child eats something. We
cannot guarantee that they will eat everything.

Birthdays

Birthdays
We will celebrate each childs birthday in class with a birthday
crown, and by singing Happy Birthday. We will not have birthday
parties in class but if you would like to bring a special snack
such as a cookie for each child, please let us know in advance.
Do not plan to bring cupcakes, cake, or drinks.
This is particularly important as we have some dangerous food
allergies! We will celebrate summer birthdays during the childs
Star Student week. (more on Star Student later)

Volunteers

Volunteers
Parent volunteers are a truly valuable asset in the classroom.
At Southmoor we are very fortunate to have many volunteers.
Please do not plan to volunteer in kindergarten for the first
THREE WEEKS! Children need time to learn the routines and rituals
of Kindergarten, and to learn that school is for children, not
parents, before they are really ready to have parents in the
classroom. We will discuss volunteering further at Curriculum
Night.

Communication

Communication
We will send a weekly newsletter in the Southmoor Thursday
Folder to let you know what is going on in the classroom. The
news will also be posted on this website. If you would like us to
send you the news each week in email, please send us an email and
we will add you to the distrubution list!
Please be sure your child brings a backpack everyday. This is the
best way to be certain that notices from school get to you. If
you have sent us a note, remind your child to give it to us.
We hope to have as much contact with parents as possible. It is
difficult to visit during class time when we need to be
nteracting with the children; however, we are always available
after school. We will have conferences scheduled at the same time
as the rest of Southmoor classes and can schedule a conference
whenever you would like to meet and discuss your child's
progress. If you have questions or concerns, please call or email
us and we will return your call as soon as possible.
