February 8-12
Wow! It’s already time for Valentine’s Day and spring conferences take place
next week! Where is the time going?
ALL ABOUT BOOKS
We are working hard to finish our all about books this week and next week. We
have gone through the whole writing process, from brainstorming to pre writing
to internet research and typing out our table of contents. We will be focusing
on finishing up our rough and final drafts this week and assembling our book
with a homemade cover by the end of next week. We will be having an author
celebration at the end of February for the students to share their all abouts!
I will let you know more about this event so you can attend and share in the
student’s written success!

The class will participate in exchanging valentines this Friday February 12th
from 3-3:40. Healthy store bought treats will be served. Feel free to join us
if you have the time. It should be a fun time for all! Please make sure to
have a valentine for each student in the class. If you need another class list
or weren’t able to make it to family night, I sent one home in Monday’s take
home folder.

Week 18 (WELCOME BACK EXTENDED EDITION!)
Happy New Year! Welcome back and I hope everybody had a great winter break.
CLASS WEBSITE:
http://teacherweb.com/CO/SouthmoorElementarySchool/MrBastoky/
Thanks to all of you who access the class website daily or who have their
students access it! This is a New Year’s reminder that the website is updated
DAILY with homework and other daily reminders. Prior to the start of a new
week, the weekly update section is updated with the new class newsletter. Be
sure to check out the website for updated wish list items and field trip
information as well. General information for the classroom as well as an email
and school website link is also available.
ACADEMIC UPDATE: SPELLING
The spelling packets might look a little different for the rest of the year!
1st graders will continue to have 10 words, however 2nd graders will now have
15 words to review (to help prepare them for 3rd grade) On Monday, I will send
home the list of words and a spelling packet of activities. Please take the
time to review the words each night with your child. The packet will be due on
FRIDAY, the day of our spelling test. The spelling tests will be graded over
the weekend and will be passed out in the following Monday’s take home folder.
They do not need to be returned!
HOMEWORK UPDATE:
-We will now be keeping track of our spelling packets and home/study links for
the week on tracking charts located in the classroom.
-Each Friday, a student can earn a sticker for the chart if they have their
packet turned in on time and each home/study link completed for the week. If
they do not have the work complete, they will have to finish it during Friday
recess.
-Each sticker can earn the student 1 Bastoky Buck and every 4 stickers, earn
them a homework pass good for a get out of 1 homework assignment!
100 DAYS OF SCHOOL:
COMING SOON, our class will celebrate the 100 days of school-HOORAY! Each
student will be asked to bring in, display, and briefly share a 100
collection. Their collection needs to be school appropriate and can be no
larger than a gallon size Ziploc bag. Please let me know if you would like me
to send home a Ziploc bag (I have quart and gallon size) for your child’s
collection. We will also be having many special academic activities geared
toward celebrating our 100th day of school! Look for a handout regarding this
event, more in depth next week.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS:
We will continue having parent volunteers starting the week of January 18th.
Please let me know if you need to change your date and time; as always, please
let me know if you would like to volunteer! We had many volunteers for the 1st
part of the year and it was an invaluable help to both the students and
myself. Thank again for all your support and help!
WISH LIST ITEMS:
For the new year, it would be great if we could have donations of sharpened
pencils and bottles of Purell. These are items we would greatly appreciate
having more of-thanks for your help with this!
