ALASKA DAY The class has been hard at work earning their class Bastoky bucks and they finally earned their 75 bucks for “Alaska Day.” As many of you might already know, I started my teaching career in the Eskimo villages of Stebbins and St. Michael in rural Alaska. In addition, I also spent my summer in Anchorage this past summer. I am excited to share my experiences and academic resources with the class! Alaska Day will take place Friday September 25th. Each academic subject will geared toward Alaska. I enclosed the following schedule of events if you would like to come join us and help us celebrate “Alaska Day!” (9-10:00) READING 1) Mini Lesson: Read the story “Do Alaskans Really Live in Igloos?” 2) Concept Focus: Text to Self Connections 3) Activity: Marshmallow and Toothpick Igloos (10:00-10:45) WRITING (a recipe and a special snack!) 1) Write the recipe for Eskimo Ice Cream 2) Make Eskimo Ice Cream 3) Eat Eskimo Ice Cream (10:45-11:45) SOCIAL STUDIES 1) The students will take a picture walk through the story “A Trip to Denali National Park” 2) View a photo DVD of pictures as well as regular pictures of the animals of Denali 3) I will share personal artifacts and share stories of what it’s like to live in an Eskimo village. I will be sharing homemade dance fans, grass baskets, ivory earrings, photographs, and more. (11:50-12:35) LUNCH We will be eating in the room as I show the movie “Wacky Alaska Winter” I will provide popsicles for a frozen dessert treat! (12:45-1:30) SPECIALS-regular schedule (1:30-2:30) SCIENCE We will be watching the video “Amazing Alaska Animals” that ties right in with our new science unit on animals! (2:30-2:45) RECESS (2:45-3:30) SHOW AND TELL ALASKA STYLE 2:45-3:00 IDITAROD SHARE by Mr. Bastoky 3:00-3:30 STUDENT SHARE: I encourage the students to bring in any item that relates or can be tied in with the theme of Alaska (even if it is a stuffed dog!) Please send me a note if you need some ideas!
