Homework Policy

What is the purpose of homework?

Homework serves two purposes. First, it gives children the opportunity to
further practice skills and concepts learned at school. Second, homework
encourages and demands responsibility.

When is homework assigned and when is it due?

Homework will be assigned on Mondays. Everyone will have until the end of
the week to complete the assignments. (Most assignments will be due on
Fridays. However, if we do not have school on Friday, the assignments will
be due on Thursday.)

Will there be homework over the weekend?

No.

Will there be homework assignments that last longer than a week?

Yes. About every 4-6 weeks, the children will be assigned a special
homework project. These projects are designed to incorporate personal
interests and research based on a thematic unit at school. They offer
weekly assignments leading up to a final deadline. (More information will
be shared with you later.)

How should homework assignments be returned to school?

Every child in the class has an orange homework folder. All homework
assignments should be placed in this folder and returned to school. The
purpose of the folder is to help students keep track of and organize their
work. Please, please, please do not lose these folders!

How will the children know what their assignment is for the week?

Assignments will be shared with the students at school. They will also be
posted on our classroom website at
http://TeacherWeb.com/CO/SteeleElementary/ShelleyLengieza

Does my child need to read every night?

Yes. Reading is a very integral part of school and homework. It is
expected that every child read at least 15 minutes each night. Students may
read independently or out loud to a grown up. Some weeks there will be
assignments that are linked to what a child is reading at home.

Will my child have spelling homework?

Yes, but not right away. Spelling homework will go home in early
September. More information will be shared with you then.

What happens on Friday?

On Friday (or the last day of the week) students will check their homework
in at school if everything is finished. Students are not allowed to check
their homework in if any portion of the week’s assignment is incomplete or
missing.

What happens if homework is not returned to school or finished?

If students do not bring in their completed homework, they will not be able
to participate in choice time on Friday or until it is finished.

What happens if a child is sick during the week?

If a child has been absent during the week please contact me or send a note
to school. Students who are absent at the beginning of the week will
receive a modified version of homework. Students who are absent during the
end of the week will be given additional time to finish their assignment
depending on the circumstances.

What if the “dog ate my homework”?

As part of their weekly assignment, each child needs to remember to bring
their homework to school. There are simply NO EXCUSES for not passing in
homework. Children who “forget” their homework will not be able to have
choice time.

Likewise, excuses or notes on Friday stating that a child did not understand
the assignment will not be accepted. There is plenty of time during the
week for children to ask questions about their homework or talk to me if
they are having problems.
