ASSIGNMENT OF CLASSROOMS
We believe that there should be students who vary in range of achievement in each classroom. Given that, we try to develop an “even mix of students” when making classroom assignments.
We also try to match teaching styles with student learning styles. Parent input is taken prior to student assignment. We used the following criteria for our returning students. The process takes over a month and we take it vary seriously. Though we do not honor requests for specific teachers, we strongly encourage parent input in friendship placements and those students that might distract your child.
1. Reading level and performance at that level
2. Degree of motivation as determined by the child’s previous teacher
3. Leadership qualities
4. Behavioral concerns
5. Styles of learning and teaching
6. Special learning or educational needs
ATTENDANCE
In order for students to do well in school, they must attend regularly. Please help your children by taking responsibility of their daily attendance.
The school year consists of 175 classroom attendance days. Encourage your children to attend school every day. If your child misses school for illness or some other reason, you should contact the school office that morning. Our school nurse will call parents who have not notified the office when their child will not be in school. We call to ensure the well-being of our students. If you know that your child will be absent for an extended period please notify the school office prior to this absence.
BEHAVIOR
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
“PAWS”
Positive Behavior Support is a program that is used at Strawberry Park Elementary School. The purpose of the program is to “front load” expectations for students. Students will be taught what the expectations are for their behavior in every aspect of the school and what voice level is appropriate. The first few weeks of school students will learn the Strawberry Park Elementary School expectations for “positive attitude with respect and safety (PAWS).” In the course of this instruction students will learn the three questions guiding all of our actions or discipline procedures in the school. These are:
Are you ready?
This means is a student prepared for recess, class work, to team with other, etc.
Are you respectful?
We are showing students that respect is a two way street when in school and must be present between students and adults. We are using WAFT to help the students remember that respect is shown through Words, Actions, Face, and Tone.
Are you being safe?
Students have their actions under control and are supervised at all times.
For more detailed information on how the PBS system will work at SPE visit our school website and take a tour of the PBS section at http://teacherweb.com/CO/StrawberryParkElementary/SchoolHomePage/SDHP1.stm PBS will be partnered with our second step program and the community virtues.
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONICS
Student cell phones must be turned off and put away during school hours. Students may use cell phones after 3:15. If a student uses a cell phone during school hours the phone will be confiscated. Parents will then need to come to the office to retrieve the phone.
Electronics are allowed at school. Individual teachers will determine when electronics can be used in the classroom. Please remember that the school is not responsible for lost or stolen electronics and other personal belongings.
COLORADO SAFE SCHOOLS ACT
This law was enacted following the Columbine High School incident.
Please talk to your children about these codes and the importance of having a safe school to attend.

DAILY SCHEDULE
Our school day begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. Students will have a forty-minute lunch period that includes recess. Students will have the opportunity to participate in at least one special (art, music, P.E., computer, library) each day. Students in third through fifth grade will participate in Spanish two days each week. There are exceptions to the schedule for activities such as award presentations, assemblies, and student presentations.
HEALTH ROOM
The Health Room is staffed all day. A registered nurse is in the building on a part-time basis and is on call during the school day. Services provided include:
1. First Aid
2. Evaluation of ailing students
3. Coordination of information on health problems between home and classroom
4. Maintenance of state required immunization records and health records
5. Annual screening of children for vision and hearing
6. Recommendations for safety and sanitation in the building and on the playground
7. Dispensing medications/therapeutic care for students and staff
Medication Policy
We recognize that there are some chronic health conditions or short-term acute health conditions which make it necessary for your child to take medicine during the school day. If it becomes necessary for medicine to be given at school, the following procedure must be followed:
1. A “Permission for medication” form must be completed by the parent and returned to the school
2. The medicine must be brought to school in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacy or physician.
3. The medication must be turned in to the health room where the student will report as required to receive it.
We will continue to administer Tylenol with your permission. This is possible because we have developed protocols for dispensing this medicine with physician approval. WE CANNOT DISPENSE ANY OTHER NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AT SCHOOL WITHOUT A DOCTOR’S PRESCRIPTION.
Sun block is necessary at our altitude and many students have allergies to certain brands. We strongly encourage you to inform the nurse of any allergies and send your child to school with the appropriate sun protection.
Immunization
Colorado law requires certain minimum immunizations before a child may attend school. Children entering the school must have certificates of these immunizations. Exceptions are made if there is a religious belief opposing the immunizations or if a physician certifies that the immunization would endanger the child’s health.
Illness at School
When a pupil becomes ill at school, an effort will be made to contact your home. If you plan to be away from home, please tell your children who they should call. When phone numbers change, please notify the school immediately. Please do not send your children to school if they have any of the following:
1. A fever of 100 degrees or more (must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school)
2. Vomiting or recurrent diarrhea (occurring more than once)
3. Frequent or painful urination
4. A bad cough or cold symptoms
5. Conjunctivitis or pink eye (highly contagious and uncomfortable)
6. Any highly contagious disease including mites or head lice, strep throat and scarlet fever
7. Earache accompanied by fever
Thank you parents for doing your part to keep our school as healthy as possible! Please call us any time you have questions during the school day about your child’s health at 871-3494.
Please remember to call the school office any time your child will miss school at 879-7550. Thank you
Accidents at School
Serious accidents will have the attention of the school nurse or other persons qualified through first aid training. Every possible effort will be made to contact you. If you cannot be contacted, the family doctor will be called.
Excuses from Physical Education
Elementary children are expected to participate in physical education. For children to be excused from this activity, they must present a written excuse from their parent or physician.
HOMEWORK
Homework is assigned by the teachers, and the amount is determined by the teacher. Students are responsible for completing their assignments. There are consequences for students who do not complete their assignments (usually a loss of recess followed by a call home when necessary). Homework rules are developed by the teachers and students and supported by the principal.
Children do not always have homework. If your child misses school, work will be made up at the discretion of the teacher. Parents are encouraged to have a regular study time at home for reading or quiet work even when no homework is assigned.
***If your child is absent and you would like to receive homework assignments, you should notify the teacher first thing in the morning so that assignments can be compiled throughout the day. It is difficult to gather assignments on short notice.
LATE ARRIVALS
Children should arrive at school on time. Children arriving on a late bus are excused. Please have your children check in at the office when they arrive late. If a child is continually late, the school will contact you.
LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY
If your child must leave school during the school day for any reason, you should come to the office. The office will then call your child down to meet you in the office. You must come into the building to pick up your child.
PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports are sent home following the end of each quarter. Parents can request information about their children’s progress at any time.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR STUDENT TEXTBOOKS AND LIBRARY BOOKS
Students are issued textbooks at the beginning of the school year. They are responsible for taking proper care of them and keeping them for the remainder of the school year. Lost or damaged texts can be very costly. Please help your child cover each textbook and remind him/her to take care of them.
Texts which are lost or destroyed must be replaced by student parent. Each text costs, on the average, between $40 and $85.
Borrowed library books are also the responsibility of your child and will need to be replaced or paid for if lost or damaged.
SANCTIONED CLASS AND SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS
At Strawberry Park, all students receive a census form prior to school year with permission for field trips with in the county. Field trips outside of the county will have an additional form for parents to sign. All forms must be signed prior to leaving. Written permission must be received. Parent volunteers are always welcome; contact your child’s classroom teacher if interested in attending a field trip. When volunteering on a field trip or in the classroom, students that are not of school age may not be in attendance due to liability issues.
SPECIAL CLASSES
Art, music and physical education are the three specials classes attended by all students in grades full day kindergarten – 5. These classes are 50 minutes in length. The specials classes have special events throughout the year such as plays, performances, field day, Jump Rope for Heart, and art shows.
Snacks and gum are not allowed in any of the specials classes. Students are encouraged to wear older clothes to art in case a ward robe becomes part of a student’s art project. Proper footwear is mandatory in PE; a “tennis” style or running shoe will reduce the risk of injury and will promote comfort during the movement activities. Crocs get slippery, especially on cool mornings in wet playground grass. Proper footwear is also necessary for movement activities in music. Most classrooms will have a cubby or tub for PE shoes that can be left behind at school.
Art and music helpers are students in the fourth and fifth grade that come in before school and during lunch to help the art and music teacher with special projects. Please inquire with those teachers at the beginning of the year if you are interested.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council is made up of student representatives and alternates from grades 3 – 5 who meet twice a month. Students hold a school wide election for the fifth grade offices of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. Classrooms hold elections to select their representative.
The Council is responsible for running the school store and organizing school wide activities; fund raisers, spirit days, environmental awareness and introducing new kids to the school staff. Profits made through the fundraising and school store are used to buy various things for the school or assist special events for our student population.
Our school colors and mascot were selected through a contest directed by our student council;
School colors: red and black
School mascot: timber wolf
Student Council has been awarded the Environmental Awareness Award from the City of Steamboat Springs. We are a green school, reducing waste and recycling as much as we can.
SCHOOL BUS RULES AND DISCIPLINE
Director of Transportation: Ed Dingledine 879-1057
School bus rules and procedures are developed by the school district and individual bus drivers to ensure the safe transportation of our students. The school bus drivers are aware of the PBS program and are working with the schools to make sure that elementary students are safe, respectful and ready.
Parents please remind your students of the following expectations:
1. Find a seat as soon as possible once you board the bus; the bus can’t move unless everyone is seated.
2. Cell phones that are used improperly may be confiscated for the duration of the bus ride.
3. If your student is on an activity trip with the school and will return after school hours, you may call the “activity trip phone line” at 871-3287 to ask when your student’s bus is expected to return to Steamboat.
Bus rules (Safe, Respectful, Ready)

Consequences
1. Talk to student.
2. Change seat.
3. Go to building principal.
4. Parent may be called at any point.
5. Loss of bus privileges.
Bus Changes

Recess
Students have a 20 minute recess following lunch each day. They may also have an additional recess at the teacher’s discretion. Please make sure your child is prepared to be outside (snow pants, coats, gloves, hat, & boots). Remember that weather changes rapidly in Steamboat.
School Cancellation
According to district policy, School will be cancelled when the temperature reaches 30 degrees below zero.
TELEPHONE/MESSAGES
Please make plans in advance with your child about what to do when school ends each day. When your children have a problem, we are happy to make a phone call to help them, but office and the classroom phone is for school business and may not be used for making social arrangements. If you need to get a message to your child please call the office before 3:00 pm. The office will get the message to the classroom and or your child.
VIRTUES
A committee of parents, the Steamboat Springs religious community, children’s organizational leaders, and teachers identified these virtues. The district has adopted our virtues model for all schools. Strawberry Park Elementary School’s virtues program teaches seven virtues: Respect, Honesty and Integrity, Responsibility, Compassion, Love and Friendship, Commitment, and Citizenship.
WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES
If you plan to move and withdraw your child from school, please notify the school office in written form stating the last day of attendance. All library books and textbooks must be returned to the school and all outstanding charges (i.e. lunch, book, library, etc.) paid before your child leaves. Your child’s records will by forwarded upon request from the new school. No withdrawal will be made on our records without official written notice from the parent(s) to the school.
