Matter, matter everywhere. Except in a vacuum of course. Matter is
everything. We've already told you that chemistry is the study of matter
and how it changes and interacts with other matter. But what is matter? http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_intro.html

Properties describe matter. A block of wood, milk, and air all have
properties. All the material on earth is in three states-solid, liquid, and
gas. The 'state' of the matter refers to the group of matter with the same
properties. In other words, you group the objects together according to
their properties. http://www.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/textbook/statesofmatter.html

Gases, liquids and solids are all made up of microscopic particles, but
the behaviors of these particles differ in the three phases. The following
figure illustrates the microscopic differences. http://www.chem.purdue.edu/gchelp/atoms/states.html

Solid, liquid, gas...solid, liquid, gas...solid, liquid, gas... You've probably
heard these three words together so many times that they sound like
some sort of meditative chant. http://www.chemheritage.org/EducationalServices/FACES/poly/tutorial/states.htm#gas.
