FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.
What are the homework expectations for first graders? Every day that first grade has learning centers, a guided reading book will come home in the brown envelope to be read by your child to a resident reader and signed off in the last column. Wednesdays a math related practice page will come home also. Most parents send in a cookie or cupcake for classmates to celebrate this special day in their child's life. This is optional and know that food allergies prevent some students from partaking of unlabeled baked goods. Mrs. Tirrell hands out a birthday pencil and crown to the celebrant and their name is read on the morning announcements. When are first grade 'specials' scheduled? Gym classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays - wear sneakers! Art class is on Wednesday, and Spanish classes are on Wednesdays and Fridays. Computer lab is on Monday morning and library is Tuesday --- REMEMBER YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS! Music classes are held on Wednesday and Friday mornings. First graders meet with their Sixth Grade Reading Buddies on Mondays and Fridays. The older students read to the younger and visa versa. There are several ways for parents to help out in first grade. 1. Field trip chaperones 2. Assisting the room parent with the three special occasions we celebrate in school: The last day of school in December, Valentine's Day, and the last day of the school year in June. 3. Assist with learning centers which occur each day for an hour during the language arts block. Some parents take the same day each week, others alternate. This has been an immense boost to the students' reading progress and the boys and girls love to have their mom, dad, or grandparent as a teacher! |
