Gifted Enrichment Program Description:
The Milford Gifted Enrichment Program is a Special Education Program that has
been in continuous operation since 1970. The program serves gifted students
in grades four through eight. The students in grades four and five meet one
day a week at Calf Pen Meadow School while sixth, seventh and eighth graders
participate for up to four periods per week at their Middle School.
The framework for Milford's Gifted Enrichment Program is based on the higher
order thinking skills of problem solving, decision making, critical thinking
and creative thinking. The Gifted Enrichment students explore both the
process and the product of learning, and connect the various thinking skills
to everyday activities.
Process refers to the development of thinking skills. For example, students
experience process through brainstorming, solving puzzles, generating
inquries, participating in creative problem solving, divergent and convergent
thinking, critical analysis, and decision making. In additiion, students
engage in metacognition (thinking about their thinking). They frequently
reflect orally and in writing about their learning experiences.
Product focuses on the application of the research process. Students generate
topics of their choice and explore them in-depth through independent study.
