HOMEWORK

The Milford Board of Ed has set the time that a second grader should spend on
homework to be twenty minutes of consentrated effort. In second grade, the
main goal of homework is to get children started in developing responsibility
and ownership.

By the end of second grade your child should be able to:
             1. Understand what the homework is before he/she leaves the
                 school each day.
             2. Put their homework in their backpacks and bring it home.
(This actually is very hard for the children to do at the
                 beginning of the year.)
             3. Do their own homework with only the guidance of an adult
using twenty minutes of concentrated effort.
             4. Place their individual homework in their backpacks to bring
their own homework back to school the following day.
(Very often the child will blame their mothers or fathers for
not putting their homework into their backpack. This should
be the child's responsibility on a nightly bases.)
             5. Children should need very little help from an adult to do
his/her homework as the year progresses. If for some reason
a child cannot complete his/her homework within
twenty-minutes please just send me a note for that
assignment the following day. This helps me a great deal in
understanding what I need to reteach or adjust for each
                 individual child.
             6. All children should attempt to do something during those
twenty-minutes of time. They should have their own quite
space to complete their homework with an adult near by.
NO HOMEWORK should be written or completed by the parent.
(You don't realize how often this happens!!)
I would rather you just send me a note in and explain the
circumstances. IT IS NOT THE PARENT'S HOMEWORK it is the
                 CHILD'S HOMEWORK.
              7. Children are given the homework for the week in advance.
Shopping at the mall, baseball, soccer games, are not
excusses for not doing their homework.
              8. The children can do their homework in advance but should only
bring the homework back to school on the day it is due.
              9. If a child chooses to do all their homework in one night they
still need to read, review math facts, work on extra
projects, or do a book report for that night's homework
                 whenever possible.
             10. Children should try to spell all words correctly and hand
in neat, legable work or they will be asked to do their
                 homework over again.
IF you have any questions about homework please e-mail me or write me a note.
I cannot stress enough the fact that HOMEWORK IS THE CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITY
and NOT THE PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY.
