Governor's Summer Reading

On June 11, 2009 the students and staff at Abraham Pierson School met with Lieutenant Governor Michael Fedele. The visit was part of the Lieutenant Governor's tour to promote the Governor's Summer Reading Program. Lieutenant Governor Fedele shared his love of reading and explained to the students all the possibilities which can occur when you are a reader. He is an avid reader and encouraged the students to read all sorts of books. The students had an opportunity to ask the Lieutenant Governor questions after he read pages from N is for Nutmeg and quizzed them on their knowledge of Connecticut history. His visit was the second activity of our summer reading program.

On Wednesday, June 10 grade 5 students and 15 staff members chatted about books. Grade 5 students selected a book from a list of texts selected by their teachers. Students were given the responsibility of reading the book and preparing for the book discussion by answering a series of questions. The Book Chat groups met for 45 minutes in various rooms in the building. All agreed this was a terrific activity and many thanks go to Mrs. Madura for organizing this activity.

On Friday, June 12, Mrs. Hydek will be at Abraham Pierson School to explain to the students the activities at the Carter Hull Library which will be offered this summer. Each year Mrs. Hydek and her staff do an amazing program and sponsor many activities which promote reading. Our students always enjoy participating and attend as many programs as they can. Check out the opportunities offered at the Carter Hull Library by the staff.

On Tuesday, June 16 Mrs. Duley and Mrs. Beato will be visiting classes and explaining the summer reading activities and the summer reading packet. The packet will be going home with students during the last week of school. Packets contain the summer reading activitiy SELL  IT! Each student at Abraham Pierson School must read a book from the list of Nutmeg Books or the list of books suggested as 'good reads' by each group of homeroom students. The poster is completed and brought to school to be shared with class members during a book share. Each classroom teacher evaluates the poster and the share. In addition, students are asked to bring in the list of books read during the summer. Lieutenant Governor Fedele challenged the students in Connecticut to read a million books. Last year they read 800,000. Pierson students will be doing their part to help meet the Governor's challenge.

____________________________________________________________________________

The results of the summer of 2008 are listed below. As you can see the number of books read by our student varies. We strongly urge each child to read a minimum of three books during the summer. One book is required. You will find the summer reading packet on the Clinton Public Schools web page. This packet will also go home with each student during the last week of school. In addition, hard copies can be found at the Henry Carter Hull Library and in the office of Abraham Pierson School, as well as our Central Office. If you have any questions, please email me at dduley@clintonpublic.org. I will be happy to respond to any of your questions or concerns.

The students at Abraham Pierson School have out done previous records. Last summer 93% of our students read and participated in the Governor's Summer Reading Challenge. Our students made posters of their favorite read this summer to share with classmates. The posters were displayed in our hallways, classrooms, and other places about the building. Our student readers are those students who read the most in each classroom. In addition, several classrooms had 100% participation in the summer reading program. Those classrooms are: Ms. Fitzgerald's ID classroom, Mrs. Skidmore's grade 4 classroom, Mrs. Madura's grade 5 classroom, Miss Rubino's grade 5 classroom, Mrs. Martino's grade 4 classroom, and Mrs. Pepe's grade 4 classroom. Congratulations to those students who participated and took on the challenge. Parents thank you for supporting your child's reading habits. Teachers did an outstanding job of promoting the benefits of being a READER! This was a wonderful way to begin the 2008 -2009 school year.
