THE GOOSE!

Mrs. M's New Neighbor

We met this gander on April
12th.
I awoke very early in the morning
not to the sound of my alarm
clock, but to the sound of a
honking gander who was standing
on the sidewalk in front of my
condo.
It took me by surprise because we
have a pond behind our condo and
it is quite normal to see ducks
and an occasional goose in the
pond. As a a matter of fact, I
EXPECT to see ducks and sometimes
geese there!
But I have never, ever seen one
standing on the sidewalk. He was
honking in a way that caused me to
have some concern for him. When I
went downstairs to see what the
fuss was all about, the opening of
the door sent him immediately into
flight.
When I returned home from school,I
immediately went to the pond and
saw the gander swimming alone. I
was still concerned and could not
stop thinking that he was trying
to tell the neighborhood something
important that morning with his
almost screeching like honking.

A Nesting Goose

The very next day, we discovered
what the Gander, now
affectionately
named Gus was trying to announce:
He's going to be a dad! The goose
is beautifully camouflaged in this
picture and she is nesting. The
neighborhood is now anxiously
awaiting the arrival of several
goslings. We have named the goose
Ginny!

A Faithful and Loyal Mate

Gus has not left this pond for
almost 30 days. He protects the
entire area so that the nesting
goose is safe from predators.
Morning, noon and night, we see
him
waiting patiently and always on
alert. It's amazing how his
faithfulness and protectiveness is
purely instinctive.
