                                        Where did everyone go?

We are leaving East Asia after completing our unit on Japan. The students did a wonderful job looking at the devastating effects of the 2011 tsunami as well as how Japan is recovering from that disaster.  Now we shift our focus to the Middle East.  This will be the first region we have studied where overpopulation is not a major concern. Rather, the students will be examining how the people of this region have adapted to one of the harshest climates on Earth. We will also be examining the conflicts of this region and the students will have a chance to try and bring peace to this troubled region.

Without geography, we’d be lost.

Rates, ratios, percents, andproportions are the "Words of the Day" in mathematics!  All classes have learned how to form proportions and solve for percents. Students have also learned howto change fractions and decimals to percents, as well as percents to decimals. How can the "proportion rubric" help you find a foolproof way to set up problems?  Ask your son or daughter to demonstrate this easy strategy to you. Many probability examples can be used in day-to-day activities, such as
determining the "best price" in cost comparisons.

Guest Speaker - Dr. David Esposito

On March 30th, Dr. David Esposito, a cardiovascular surgeon, took time from his busy schedule to speak to our 7th grade students.  The students developed a better understanding about the cardiovascular system when Dr. Esposito made "real world connections" by comparing the workings of the heart to a car battery and his profession to that of a plumber.  The students were delighted when he passed around artificial arteries, examples of stents, and bottles of preserved "crud" (plaque) from human arteries.  The 7th grade can't thank Dr. Esposito enough for contributing
to their knowledge of the cardiovascular system!  Who knows, maybe our East Shore students will become future heart surgeons!

Sometimes it is hard to reach out to someonw who is different from you.  There are risks in letting someone into your life.  Getting to know other people, however, can make your own life better in many ways.  When you reach out to others, you open yourself up to new experiences, ideas, and emotions.  The next learning unit in English is all about relationships.  Students will discuss and explore how the characters in
he short stories and poems read in class had invited others into their own lives.  Students will then select their own novel to read for the third trimester.  We are coming into the home stretch with the thirty book challenge.
How many books has your child read so far?  Check their progress with their chart.

Students will also continue fine tuning their writing skills with emphasis on editing for mechanics and revising by adding more elaboration in their published pieces.  A friendly competition is also brewing on Poetry Island.  What poet will be the last one standing?  Tune in to find out.
