Team News:
Happy May! This is a busy month for our eighth graders here at East Shore. Notices should have come home with information about our Holiday Hill field trip to be held on June 7. Please pay attention to due dates for the permissions slips and payments. Remember that pie profits can be used for this trip. The final round of NWEA tests will be administered the week of May 7th, and conferences are scheduled for May 10 and 11. Don't forget to send in your appointment slip asap. On May 18, all of our students will be entertained by a Spanish Dancer, courtesy of our wonderful PTA. Thank you so much! We are all looking forward to a peaceful end to the school year!
Language Arts:
Team 6 students have completed their study of science fiction and The Giver. They are in the process of creating their own Utopian communities, taking care that they do not become dystopias like in The Giver. Students will spend one entire week practicing their writing skills as they write a memoir. This assignment is usually my favorite writing piece of the year because I find that your children really speak from their hearts when they narrate their stories. We will finish the year reading the play, "The Diary of Anne Frank" in class, and a novel or two of the student's choice. As you can see, we still have a lot to do! Please remember that students are required to pleasure read 100 minutes a week! Ask them about their latest novel and discuss your reading with them. dwasilewski@milforded.org

US History:
Welcome to May! Having successfully expanded the nation, debates over slave and free states will lead the nation to a political shift. As the Republican Party and Abraham Lincoln comes onto the national political scene, Southern states will grow concerned over their right to continuing the practice of slavery. Students will see how this social conflict grew into a Civil War. This conflict will be our final major topic of our school year. Students will examine the various causes that led to the outbreak of war, and the extensive debates that resulted from those issues. These debates will allow students to see the different points of view surrounding secession as battle breaks out at Fort Sumter. Additionally, students will engage in reading historical fiction through Michael Shaara's "The Killer Angels". This retelling of the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of those who were there will deepen our students' knowledge of the different perspctive of the North and South.
