What is TAG?
TAG is an acronym for the Trumbull Academically Gifted Program.
How are students identified for the TAG Program?
Students identified for TAG are in the top 5% of the total Trumbull Public
Schools population for that grade level. These students demonstrate
exemplary ability in creativity and facility of ideas, intellectual
curiosity, motivation, task commitment, independence and responsibility. An
Identification Team or Planning and Placement Team reviews the data from
standardized test scores, which include OLSAT and CMT, and teacher rating
scales, to determine if a student is eligible to participate
in the TAG Program.
What is the mission of the TAG program?
The Trumbull Public Schools will provide an academically gifted program for fourth and fifth grade
students who meet the school district’s criteria for participation in the program. The mission of the
TAG Program is to address the intellectual and social needs of the identified gifted students and to
provide them with learning opportunities to explore and expand specific areas of interest.
What is TAG Seminar?
TAG Seminar is a district-wide program. The weekly Seminar gives your child the opportunity to
interact with all of the identified students in his or her grade level across the district. Fifth grade
TAG students will attend weekly Seminars at Middlebrook School through January. Fourth grade
TAG students will attend weekly Seminars at Middlebrook School beginning in February.
What will my child do while s/he is at Seminar?
During Seminar, your child will learn and apply problem-solving skills and strategies, develop
analytical and interpretive skills, learn and apply research skills for gifted students, and
build critical thinking and reasoning skills. The curriculum, instruction and program design of TAG
is modeled after the Standards for Gifted Programs as published by the National Association for
Gifted Children (NAGC).
What materials does my child need to bring to Seminar?
Students need to come prepared for Seminar with their TAG Seminar binder, folder and journal,
assignment pad, and a healthy peanut-free snack. As the weather gets cooler, please be sure your
child wears a jacket on the bus ride to Middlebrook School.
How does my child get to Seminar?
We have arranged for busing through the Transportation Department. After students have
checked in with their homeroom teachers, buses will pick-up the TAG students at their home
schools at approximately 8:45 AM. The buses will bring students to the front of Middlebrook
School where they will be greeted by the TAG teachers. At 11:15 AM, buses will pick up students
from Seminar and return them to their home schools. A field trip permission slip must be signed
by a parent and returned to the TAG teacher before the first Seminar date.
Will I be informed of my child’s progress in TAG?
You will receive tri-mester progress reports from the TAG teachers. The TAG teachers are available
to meet with you by appointment during the school year.
Is my child responsible for making up all of the classroom work missed while at Seminar?
Students are required to complete essential assignments they missed while at TAG.
This information will be indicated on the “What did I miss while I was at TAG?” form that is available
to all classroom teachers and TAG students.
Will my child have homework for TAG?
Yes. There will be times when students need to complete an assignment for TAG. Students are
required to bring their assignment pad to TAG Seminar in order to record homework assignments.
We will send home periodic updates with your child to inform you of any other pertinent
information.
What happens if there is a delayed opening on a Seminar day?
When there is a delayed opening, Seminar is cancelled for that day.
How can I contact my child’s TAG teacher?
You may call the TAG teacher’s home school and leave a message. Mrs. Williams teaches at TA and
FT; Mrs. Molloy teaches at JR and MB; and Mrs. Huffman teaches at BH and DF. The best way to
contact your child's TAG teacher is through Trumbull Public School District email.
