Mathematics Department
GRADING POLICY 2008-2009
STUDENTS GRADES ARE BASED UPON:
30% - Test/Quizzes
30% - Classwork/Assignments
20% - Math Binder
10% - District Trimester Assessment
10% - Class Preparation and Participation
DISTRICT TRIMESTER ASSESSMENT:
This category pertains to the district-wide trimester assessments. All
students are required to achieve a grade of 70% on each trimester assessment.
TEST/QUIZZES:
Test and quizzes will be given on a regular basis. Both tests and quizzes
will be announced. There will never be a pop quiz.
If a quiz is missed and not made up according to the student handbook, then
a zero will be averaged in for the grade.
CLASSWORK/ASSIGNMENTS:
Because math is sequential and can be mastered only through practice, it is
important that all assignments be completed. Credit for assignments out of
the textbook is all or nothing. In order to receive credit, the proper
heading must be displayed, every problem must be attempted, and all work
must be shown and sincere. Answers shown without work will not receive any
credit. No work = No credit.
The work done during the actual class period is very important. Work missed
because of absences will have to be made up in order to receive credit for
this portion of your grade. It is the responsibility of each student to
obtain and make up any missed work according to the student handbook. All
missed work will be placed in the "while you were out folder" displayed in
the classroom. It is your responsibility to check the folder if you are
absent. It is also your responsibility to check the class calendar for all
assignments.
MATH BINDER:
Each student is required to keep a separate three-ring math binder
(minimum 2”), with 5 dividers. Students will also need graph paper. Paper
for taking daily notes will be provided. This math binder is an integral
part of this course and will be needed for future math courses. The math
binder will contribute greatly to your success. On a regular basis you will
be given a rubric on how your math binder will be graded and how it should
be organized. Math binder and assignment quizzes will be announced and/or
unannounced. On occasion, the math binder may be collected.
CLASS PARTICIPATION AND PREPARATION:
Participating in class includes coming to class prepared. You are expected
to bring to class your textbook, math binder, pencil, calculator, a package
of 100, 3 x 5 notecards and any other materials the instructor requires.
Each student is required to have a calculator. If you presently own a
calculator, please check with your instructor to see if it is acceptable.
Algebra I, Geometry and Honors Algebra II must have a CASIO FX-300MS, or
similar.
