Rubric For Reading Response
Exceeds Proficiency
a. The student will write a well-organized paragraph(s) using a topic sentence and supporting 
details.
b. The student will use four or more details that are specific and fully supported with evidence from 
the text.
c. The student will use punctuation, capitalization, spelling and handwriting that exceed grade level 
expectations. (IEPs will be taken into account)
d. The student will make a text to text, text to self, or text to world connection.
Proficiency
a. The student will write a well-organized paragraph using a topic sentence and supporting details.
b. The student will use at least three details, some are specific and some may be general and not 
fully supported with evidence from the text.
c. The student will use punctuation, capitalization, spelling and handwriting that are grade 
appropriate. (IEPs will be taken into account)
d. The student will make a text to text, text to self, or text to world connection.
Near Proficiency
a. The student will write a paragraph including a topic sentence and supporting details.
b. The student will use two or three details that are not fully supported with evidence from the text.
c. The student will use punctuation, capitalization, spelling and handwriting, some of which is grade 
appropriate. (IEPs will be taken into account)
d. The student may or may not make a connection.
