What supplies do I need?

Pen, pencil with eraser, ruled/loose-leaf paper in a plastic folder with
brads, and a correcting pen. (colored pencils, markers, highlighters should
stay at home), This will be your social studies "notebook". You should put
20 pieces of loose-leaf paper in your folder. I will supply you with a folder
at the beginning of the year. If this folder gets detroyed or lost, it is
YOUR responsibility to replace it. Please keep paper at home to add to your
folder as needed. We clean out our folder TOGETHER after each test.

How do I study for social studies?

Read the Prepare to Read section, set a purpose, know your objectives, read
carefully, take notes, ask questions, make essential questions(Who, what,
WHY, HOW?)make flash cards, write out answers, reread and reflect on what you
just read, make connections, get a study partner, make up practice questions
and answers. Creat a picture that represents the concepts, create a graphic

What if I am still confused?

Ask Mrs. Olschan for help or a friend during learning center. Use Learning
centers as a time to ask questions, go over material, work with the teacher
or in a small study group. Ask a family member to help you study or "quiz
you" Just ask :) Write down what you do not understand then come see me

Why am I forgetting my homework or missing assignments?

You may need to learn to be more responsible and make using your your
homework planner a habit, not just writing ALL of the homework word-for-word,
but looking at the planner at the end of the day when you pack up AND at
HOME!!! DO NOT ASSUME YOU HAVE NO HOMEWORK< YOU MUST LOOK AT THE PLANNER!!
This takes practice. You must write out the homework word for word from the
board. You might need to give yourself reminder notes to check your planner
by writing a "note to self" where you can view it when you get home from
school, such as on your fridge or bedroom door. Check your planner every
night and mark out the HW that is complete. Be sure to put your homework in
your social studies folder then in your backpack and NOT in your Text book!!

Why am I unorganized?

Again Managment of self is a learned process. You must take the time each
evening to clean and organize your binder. ALL HOMEWORK MUST BE PUT BACK IN
THE PROPER FOLDER AND THEN PUT BACK IN YOUR BOOKBAG!!!! If you are unsure of
what to
toss, put it in a folder and go through it with your teacher during learning
center. In my class, all notes and homework from each chapter must stay in
your folder. After the chapter test, we go through your folder together and
discard work that we do not need anymore.

What is my goal as a 6th grader?

To aquire skills to become a self-sufficient student; which is: To learn
skills that help me become more independent. To learn what my strengths and
weaknesses are and become an engaged and respectful person in society. To
make connections between what I learn in school and how we live today. To
appreciate others and not only accept everyone but enjoy their differences.
To accept my unique character traits and learn from my mistakes. My goal is
to work hard because I know that working hard now and learning as much as I
can will pay off in so many ways not only when I am older, but now!!!!! To
become a person that THINKS before acting and reflects on the actions already
taken to improve who I am as a person and learn how to become a better
person.
