Welcome back! We have finally gotten into the swing of things this year. There
have been some changes to our schedule but we have finally gotten the hang of
our routine. We are still learning about classroom expectations and procedures
but I am confident we will have a better understanding of them in no time at all!
In writing we have been reviewing the parts of the narrative writing diamond.
In doing so we have taken the time to review entertaining beginnings and
analyze how authors use them in their writing. As well we have practiced
taking a timed writing prompt to see what we remembered about the writing
diamond and to set goals to work on this year. We will be moving onto
elaboration by adding details to describe our story critical characters,
settings, and objects.
In reading we have been taking a close look at character traits. In our unit
of study we have looked at the difference between external attributes and
internal traits. We have also analyzed how these traits drive or help a
character reach their motive in the story. Connecting to the inner character
helps students gain deeper comprehension of the story plot and theme.
In math we have finished Unit 1 and our exploration of polygons, lines,
segments, and rays. We have been working on completing Unit 2 and practiced
our addition an subtraction strategies while incorporating ballpark estimates.
We have also worked on making line plots, tally charts and bar graphs. We have
explored the landmarks maximum, minimum, range, median and mode in a given set
of data. Be sure to continue to help your child study his/her math facts nightly.
In social studies we have been learning about the geography of Egypt. Students
read a play and created a map of Egypt. Students also learned about Egypt's
economy, who they traded with, and what they imported and exported. They had
the chance to explore the different levels of society. They learned about the
social class pyramid that made up the social/work structure of ancient Egypt
and compared it to our school and society today.
Be sure to check back often for updates and new information as it becomes
available.
