Should I assist my child with homework assignments?
Please feel free to assist your child as needed on any homework assignments.
Most assignments being sent home are review from lessons taught during the
day. Our goal is that the students are able to practice these concepts at
home. The continued practice at home and school will hopefully lead to
mastery of the concept.
How can I help my child with reading?
It is so important to practice, practice, and practice. At this age,
children need a great deal of exposure to various types of literature
including fiction and nonfiction texts. Our goal is to enable children to
feel successful as they read. To avoid undue frustration, I recommend
choosing books that your child can read without too much assistance. Reading
a story should be enjoyable for a child, not painstaking. The town library
offers a wide variety of books for children at all different reading levels.
Children should also be able to retell the characters, setting, and events in
a story. If a book is too difficult children often are not able to
comprehend what they have read. I recommend teaching children that reading
is an enjoyable part of your nightly routine.
