Reading

We use the Houghton-Mifflin reading program in first grade.  Our class is currently reading Theme 4 called LET'S BE FRIENDS!  Stories in this theme include Go Away, Otto!, Two Best Friends and Dog School.  The class reads the stories together in small groups and works on responding to comprehension questions in writing, as well as story vocabulary.  The response log sheets are sent home for your review.

The children have also participate in literacy centers and guided reading groups. Small groups are called to read with the teacher.  Two teachers, Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Mattessich, will be working with groups during reading time.  During guided reading the children will work on reading strategies, vocabulary, responding to the text, and comprehension activities.  These books will then be sent home for additional practice with you.

In December our theme is the season of Winter and celebrating winter holidays.  These books are in our class bookcase.  We will share many of these stories during our class Read Aloud time.
