Our class is currently working on a Social Studies unit about our government, national holidays (specifically upcoming Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving) and national symbols. We began the unit with a class book about where rules need to be followed. The children brainstormed places such as the library, school, home, restaurants, and the bus. These were all great ideas!
During the month of December, our focus will shift to holidays and how they are celebrated around the world.
Other units that will be studied throughout the year are - Community Helpers, the Rainforest ecosystem, and continents. Weather patterns will also be explored through Morning Meeting recording and graphing. A monthly report, which will include the weather and temperature graph results, will be sent home on the last school day
of each month.
Work completed during Science and Social Studies units will often be collected and sent home at
the end of the unit in a packet, which will include a cover sheet introducing the topic and
major teaching points. Questions to ask your child at home about the unit will also be included
in this letter.
