Welcome to Grade 5 announcements: May, 2012 Students enjoyed the role playing court scene at the Old State House in Hartford. The Room of Oddities was also a big hit! The oddities inculded many rare insects and mammals. Period 2 students only will have a test on Wednesday, May 16th. April, 2012 So much happening in 5th grade. A field trip to Hartford will take place on Friday, May 4th. D.A.R.E continues each Tuesday. In math students have been introduced to the Four Fours Project. Manipulation of the number 4 is taking place so that students can solve problems 1-100! March, 2012 D.A.R.E is beginning tomorrow March 27th! Classes will continue on Tuesdays through May 22nd. D.A.R.E will be presented as a decision making model to help students make better choices. Students will discuss the ability to define the problem that they may encounter; assess their choices; respond to information gathered; and evaluate if a good choice has been made. A math test will be given on Wednesday, April 4th. Students can study for this test by practicing long division (example: 372 divided by 9). Also the homework that is assigned this week, Practice Test # 1-15, mirror the types of questions that can be found on the test. Students will be working on these types of questions in class to become familiar with the vocabulary as well as computation needed to solve problems. Also, you may want to view the Parent Information Topic 4 link for more examples of items that may appear on the test. March 19, 2012 CMT sessions are complete! Students are back to a regular schedule. Check homework link to see assignments. Students have been learning/practicing the traditional method of long division in class. This week's homework deals with estimation and division and problem solving with division. March 12, 2012 Students have finished the math portion of the CMT. This week they will be working on the Reading, Language Arts, and Science portions. Continue to make sure that your child gets to bed early and has a good breakfast! Morning snack is working very well. Students enjoy a quick snack before the testing begins. March 1, 2012 Mrs. Gwinnell, our new assistant principal, visited the 5th grade students today! She explained to students that the CMTs will begin on Monday, March 5th. Her message was simple: eating a good breakfast, getting to bed early, and arriving to school on time would allow students to do their best on testing days. Students will also be allowed to have a quick snack before they take a test. February 22, 2012 Students will have a short test on February 28th. Information concerning topics to be covered (fractions, geometry) is in the math Learning Journal. February 13, 2012 Students are working hard on a CMT review. This week we will review Venn Diagrams ranging from "easy" to "what a challenge". In addition lessons with coordinate grids will take place. Time to get out the Battleship game! We have just about mastered writing multiplication story problems and will move on the division story problems. January 31, 2012 Conferences are going to be held on February 16, 2012. Parents will be notified if the team of 5th grade teachers feel that a conference is necessary at this time. Students showed great effort during the district assessments last week! Everyone did his or her best! January 23 This week students will be reviewing the rubric for Strand 25 (Mathematical Applications), and completing a couple of these types of questions in class. We will also continue to learn more about fractions including strategies for finding equivalent fractions. January 17 A test on Topic 3 will be given on January 18th. Students brought home books this evening 1/9, to complete work on page 84. This will serve as a review of the sections of Topic 3 that will be on the test. (Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.7.) We will continue to review these sections in class as well. Students are so well prepared bringing in pencils, pens, and erasers! Happy New Year! Students returned to school well prepared with pencils and pens. There will be a quiz on area, perimeter, and measurement on Thursday, January 5th. Students should study information in their Learning Journal to prepare for this short quiz. December 19th, 2011 Still shopping for the holiday season? Don't forget to restock your child's suppy of pencils, red pens, and erasers. A good, handheld pencil sharpener would be fantastic! Best wishes to all for a healthy and restful winter break! December 12th, 2011 Students will be having a quiz on Friday, December 16th. It will include concepts and vocabulary from the last 9 vocabulary words posted in the learning journal. Exponential notation, standard notation, and expanded notation are some of the concepts that will be included. Good luck the the 5th grade students who are perfoming tomorrow night! December 5th, 2011 Students should continue to study words for Topic 3 that are in the Learning Journal. We will continue to add vocabulary and concepts to this section; the study of Topic 3 should be ongoing. November 21, 2011 Wishing everyone a terrific Thanksgiving Day! November 4, 2011. Esteem Day: Look for an informational handout that went home with students today. On November 17th all fifth grade students will be participating in Esteem Day. October 24, 2011 There will be a test on Topic 2 on Friday, October 28th. Homework this week will serve as a study guide for this test. These questions mirror questions that might be on the test. In addition, students did a wonderful job creating a vocabulary section in the math learning journal! Students should study these words for Topic 2 each evening this week. Reminder: Math books need to be covered by Wednesday, October 26th. If you would like email notification of upcoming tests please click on the NewsFlash link. October 10th, 2011 Checking the Parent Portal for grades? Please do not be alarmed if you see an assignment but your child does not have a grade attached to that assignment. In the case of the recent test given on Friday, October 7th, some students did not finish the test in the class period and will be afforded additional time on Tuesday, October 11th. If you would like to have a "test alert" sent to you via email, please see the NewsFlash tab. You can register there, and information concerning upcoming tests will be emailed to you. "On Time" homework return has been fantastic! I am so proud of each and every 5th grade student for his/her efforts with homework! October 4th, 2011 Period 4 students will be able to take home the study guide on Wednesday, October 5th. Students have been working hard in class to review for this test. October 3, 2011 Students in Period 2 and 3 math class brought home a study guide today. Students in period 4 math class will bring the study guide home on Tuesday. Students should use this study guide to review for the test that will take place Friday, October 7th. Homework that is assigned this week will serve as a review for this test as well. Also, students have done a terrific job with homework completion! 9/28/2011 Grade 5 will be conducting conferences on October 26th and 27th this year. If we feel that a conference with your child is warranted, then you will be contacted. However, if you would still like to schedule a conference, then please email your child's homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers will gather information from the academic areas concerning your child and present it at the conference. If your child is in my homeroom, please click on the link "Conference Information" to find additional information concerning dates and times to sign up for conferences. 9/21/2011 Students will be arriving home today with a study guide for a short quiz that will be given on Friday, September 23rd. The quiz will include changing decimals to fractions, and fractions to decimals. Students will be asked to change numbers given in Standard Form to Expanded Form and Word Form. 9/12/2011 A note about the Thursday Paper manila envelope that will come home with your child/children: The Thursday envelope is a tool to enhance communication with parents. Each Thursday your child/children will bring home this envelope that might be filled with newsletters from the teachers, grade level, school, and PTO. If you have signed up for electonic communication these items will be sent electronically. The Thursday envelope will also contain corrected homework and daily work, as well as results of various assessments. We hope that each week you will look forward to emptying this envelope and reviewing the information with your child/children. Please help your child/children remember to return the empty envelope to school each Friday! Though we did have a late start to the school year, the students have made a wonderful transition to the middle school! Ms. Marcous
