Course Description:
In Grade 3, students learn music by developing their musicianship skills as
well as the full range of their intelligences. Through creativity and
self-expression, students will continue to develop their musical aptitude. By
engaging in these activities, the children will develop an understanding of
their relationship with music and culture. Students will attend a live
performance of an orchestra.
Student Learning Objectives:
The student will:
1. sing: by rote; accompanied and unaccompanied; on pitch; with appropriate
posture, expression and interpretation, tone color, dynamics, phrasing and
diction; rhythmically, maintaining a steady tempo and blending vocal timbres.
2. sing echo responses, ostinati, partner songs, rounds, call and response.
3. differentiate between song and speech (sing and chant).
4. respond to musical cues.
5. use melodic and percussion instruments to perform and/or create basic
patterns, and ostinati.
6. perform folk dance movements.
7. create lyrics.
8. perform and improvise simple melodic and rhythmic patterns.
9. create and arrange music and simple dramatizations to accompany songs and
readings.
10. create short rhythmic vocal and instrumental phrases within specified
guidelines.
11. identify music symbols and traditional notation as used in text.
12. identify contrasts, i.e., fast/slow (allegro/adagio), loud/soft
(forte/piano), high/low, skip/step, same/different, staccato/legato, etc.
13. respond by moving, describing using appropriate terminology and answering
questions.
14. develop listening skills through exposure to a variety of musical styles.
15. identify simple music forms.
16. identify instruments including instruments of many cultures.
17. devise criteria for evaluating music and music performances.
18. appreciate others’ performance.
19. identify ways in which the principles and subject matter of other
disciplines taught in school are interrelated with those of music.
20. listen to and identify music of other styles, periods and cultures.
21. differentiate between solo and ensemble performance.
22. demonstrate proper audience etiquette.
