Course Description:
In Grade 4, students learn music by developing their musicianship skills as
well as the full range of their intelligences. Through creativity and
self-expression, students will continue to develop their musical aptitude. By
engaging in these activities, the children will develop an understanding of
their relationship with music and culture. Students will be given the
opportunity to perform in ensembles including chorus, band and orchestra.
They will also attend a live performance of a ballet.
Student Learning Objectives:
The student will:
1. sing: by rote; accompanied and unaccompanied; on pitch; with appropriate
posture, expression and interpretation, tone color, dynamics, phrasing and
diction; rhythmically, maintaining a steady tempo and blending vocal timbre.
2. sing ostinati, partner songs, rounds, call and response, and simple
two-part harmony.
3. respond to cues of a conductor.
4. use pitched and unpitched instruments to perform and improvise rhythm and
melodic patterns
5. perform complex folk dance movements.
6. create lyrics and simple dramatizations.
7. create and arrange music and simple dramatizations to accompany songs and
readings.
8. create short rhythmic vocal and instrumental phrases within specified
guidelines.
9. read and write music symbols and traditional notation as used in text.
10. identify contrasts, i.e., fast/slow (allegro/adagio), loud/soft
(forte/piano), high/low, skip/step, same/different, staccato/legato, etc.
11. respond by moving, answering questions, and describing.
12. develop listening skills through exposure to a variety of musical styles.
13. identify simple music forms.
14. identify instruments, including instruments of other cultures.
15. use appropriate terminology in describing music and explaining their
preferences.
16. devise criteria for evaluating music and music performances.
17. identify ways in which music relates with other subjects
18. listen to music of other styles, periods and cultures.
