Course Description:
In Grade 5, students learn music by developing their musicianship skills as
well as the full range of their intelligences. Through creativity and
self-expression, students will continue to develop their musical aptitude. By
engaging in these activities, the children will develop an understanding of
their relationship with music and culture. Students will be given the
opportunity to perform in ensembles including chorus, band and orchestra.
Student Learning Objectives:
The student will:
1. sing accurately with good breath control, expression and technical
accuracy.
2. sing music written in two or three parts.
3. sing music of diverse genres and cultures.
4. respond to cues of a conductor.
5. perform instrumental solos and accompaniments accurately and
independently, with appropriate expression.
6. create simple harmonic/melodic accompaniments.
7. improvise simple melodic and rhythmic variations.
8. compose short pieces within specified guidelines.
9. read and write music symbols.
10. identify standard notation symbols as used in text.
11. use standard notation to record their musical ideas and the musical ideas
of others.
12. describe music using appropriate terminology.
13. Analyze the elements of music while listening to music of different
styles, periods and cultures.
14. identify simple music forms.
15. develop criteria for evaluating music and music performances and apply the
criteria in their personal listening and performing.
16. evaluate the quality of their own and others’ performances.
17. identify ways in which the principles and subject matter of other
disciplines taught in school are interrelated with those of music.
