NewsFlash 1

Conferences went very well.  It was nice to meet with all of you.  We want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.  In December we will be learning about Holidays Around the World.  If any of you have special holiday traditions and would like to share them with the first graders, please contact your child's teacher. We are looking forward to this Social Studies Unit.

Reading and Writing
This month we have incorporated feelings, visualization, labeling and speech bubbles to our writing. Both our Reading and Wiritng programs begin with the teacher sharing literature. Ideas are shared with a partner one day and then the writing is done for the next two to three days. During this time the writing pieces are edited and revised with added details.  We have created class books for the children to read in their classrooms.  The children have done a nice job of applying the strategies to their writing.

Roaring Reader
Read each night with your child and log the book on the Roaring Reader Log or Calendar.  Your child should write a muscle word or trick from kindergarten or first grade in the space provided.

Fundations
We have started putting letters together to form words.  We tap them out and blend the sounds together.  We have also worked on writing sentences that start with a capital and end with a period.  It is also important to leave a space between words.

Writing
We have started out by having the children write using a sentence starter.  Each student also has a writing journal to be used in class.  We will be focusing on adding details to one event, not a list of activities.
Math
We have been solving word problems and it is important to show your work or how you got to an answer.
