Language Literature

LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Welcome to Language and Literature! This is a full year class for
juniors and seniors. This class will focus on the study of literature,
language development, writing, and vocabulary. I look forward to an
enjoyable and rewarding class with you!

These are the steps you need to take to guarantee success in this
class:

Come prepared to class every day. This means complete all homework
and reading assignments, bring your textbook and a notebook to class every
day, bring pens and pencils for writing, and do not be late to class. Hard
work will increase your learning and the learning of everyone in the
classroom. During class time, I expect you to contribute to class
discussions, complete all assignments, and work cooperatively with your
classmates. Treat everyone (this includes the teacher!) with fairness and
respect, and you will receive the same in return. If you are absent from
class, check with a classmate or me as soon as you return for your
assignments. Depending on the length of your absence, you will have up to
three days to make up homework assignments, one week to make up tests and
quizzes.. If you need extra help on any class work, I will be available
after school.
I issue lav passes at the beginning and at the end of class. Do not
ask me for a lav pass during the middle of class unless it is an emergency.

Your marking period grade will be determined by the following
criteria:

Attendance

**Daily attendance will affect course credit**
**You are allowed sixteen unexcused absences from this course.**
**If you are absent, bring a note from a parent or a doctor's note
(if an excused absence) when you return.**

Portfolio/Notebook (5)

Portfolios and notebooks will be examined through the semester. Keep
all corrected papers in your portfolio. Keeping your portfolio safe is your
responsibility. I will provide space in the back of the classroom for you to
store your portfolio. If you wish, you may bring it to class each day with
your notebook. If you are absent, ask a classmate to let you copy the notes
and classwork you missed. I will assign points according to the
completeness, organization, and neatness of the portfolio and the notebook.

Quiz and Project Average (20)

Quizzes and projects will be averaged and will equal 20% of the
marking period grade. If you miss a quiz, I expect you to make it up within
a week. Projects may sometimes have a double weighted grade.

Test Average (40)

Test grades will be averaged and will equal 40% of the marking period
grade. If you miss a test, you must make it up within a week.

Journal Writing (10)

Journals are an important part of the class. Journal entries may be
either a specific response to a question asked in class or a free response
writing. Each entry should be dated. If you are absent from a class, you
should complete the writing at home. Journals will be examined throughout
the year. Grades will be determined by the quality and quantity of the
writing. A minimum of fifteen pages (8 x 11) of writing is expected for each
marking period.

Journal deadlines are important. I do not accept late journals. If
you are in the building the day journals are due, you must hand in your
journals.

Writing Assignments (10)

Writing assignments will be assigned frequently. Assignments will be
averaged and will equal 10% of the marking period grade.

Writing deadlines are important. Late writing assignments will lose
ten points for each day late.

Classwork, Homework, and Class Participation (15)

Points will be assigned for all homework assignments, class
assignments, and class participation.. These assignments will equal 15% of
the marking period grade.
Negative class behavior (causing frequent distractions, disruptions,
and disorder) will affect your grade in this category.
If a student cannot use the school computers because of a violation
of school policy, then the student will receive a zero for classwork on the
days that the class is working on an assignment which requires using the
computers.
