December 6, 2008
Happy December! It is great to be back at school. I'm looking forward to
meeting with everyone next week during conferences. You will get a
confirmation letter sent home this Monday with your date and time. Please
let me know if you will be unable to make your conference so we can
reschedule.
The students have been working hard in reading with retelling. Being able
to retell a story sequentially and with detail is an important skill in
their literacy development. You can practice this skill with your child
after they read their daily homework book - have them close the book and
tell you, from the beginning, what happened in the story. If they need the
book for support, that's OK, but see what they can do first without it. If
your child isn't quite reading independently just yet, have them retell
other things throughout the day - what happened at school? How do you make
your favorite snack? Any kind of sequencing activity, from tying your shoes
to the events in your favorite TV show, can be related in order.
In math, we are working on our Frames and Arrows routine - we will be
practicing this a lot. The students identify the rule to follow, and then
fill in the frames with the correct number. Moving up and down the number
line and number grid lays the foundation for addition and subtraction
facts. Next week we will begin working with dimes. Any practice counting
by fives, ones and tens will be helpful!
See you next week at conferences!
Love,
Mrs. Reed
