| Our Multiage Classroom
Our classes are composed of first and second grade students of different ages
intentionally grouped for learning who remain with the same teacher for two years.
Our multiage classes reflect a family environment. Just as a family gains strength from
the talents and interests of its members, our multiage classes are enriched by the
diversity of the students. Our multiage classes are more likely to reflect the range of
social situations in which individuals will find themselves throughout their lifetime. The
environment to learn is similar to the workplace or the home.
First grade students are refered to as "youngers" and second grade students as
"olders." "Olders" act as models for the "youngers" both academically and socially.
They develop leadership skills as they work and help younger students. "Youngers"
learn routines and behaviors that are modeled by older students. Roles change for the
students each year.
For the majority of the day, both "olders" and "youngers" work together at their own
level to maximize student learning in all areas of the curriculum. The two times of the
day when "olders" and "youngers" are separated are during spelling and math.
Parent involvement is an intricate part of our multiage classroom. We welcome
parent volunteers as they work with students, assist teachers in preparing materials for
lessons, help with special projects and facilitate our weekly home reading program.
