Activities

Daffodil Drive for the American Cancer Society --In the spring Live Oaks takes part in the Daffodil Drive to benefit The American Cancer Society. Live Oaks School started participating in the drive 20 years ago. They have raised thousands of dollars for the society

D.A.R.E.--Fifth grade students participate in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. This 14-17 week program is taught by a Milford police officer who is trained to educate students about the dangers of drugs and violence. Students complete an informative workbook, role play, and participate in interesting discussions based on videos and hypothetical circumstances a student might face. Students are required to write an essay sharing their feelings about the program and tell what they have learned to stay drug-free. At the D.A.R.E. graduation, students receive certificates and the three winning essays are awarded prizes.

Mentoring Program--As a means of continuing to expand our caring community, we joined Orchard Hills in their already existing mentor program with Foran High School. Students in grades K-5 are eligible to become mentees. Mentors help to build self-confidence and self-esteem while providing support and being good listeners. High school students go through special training to become mentors and visit their Live Oaks mentee once a week during school. Referrals may be made by parents, teachers, or other school personnel. If you would like further information regarding the Mentor Program, please contact Rose Lacobelle, principal.

Book Bee-- This PTA sponsored program has been running successfully for the last 3 years at Live Oaks School. It is a game-show type competition between grade level classrooms. Children in grade 4 compete against their peers as do the 5th graders. In the spring, these students are given a book list and a letter describing the competition. It is their responsibility to begin reading listed books and take notes on what they have read. Round One takes place in November, and at the end of the competition a panel of five student will be chosen to represent their classroom. Round Two takes place approximately a month later. During this round, the panel will be asked questions and scored in preparation for the final round. Round Three takes place the following month in the all-purpose room so that parents can come and cheer on their children. The class with the most points at the end of the round earns the right to display the Book Bee Trophy in their classroom until the next competition the following year.
