Reading

Treasures

Our Treasures program is a whole group comprehensive reading program. It
includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, sight words, vocabulary,
writing, grammar, and spelling.

Our new theme is Where Animals Live. We will learn the digraphs th, sh, ch, wh.
The skills taught will be irregular plural nouns, summarizing main idea and
retell.

Guided Reading

Children are placed in small groups with others reading at the same level. The
children will read books at their instructional reading level. Every time your
child reads a book in school, they will bring home a black and white copy of
the book in their Book Buddy bag to read at home. Children are to read the
book aloud to an adult and be able to retell the story. Parents must sign the
blue sheet and return both the book and blue sheet to school the next day.

Reading Calendars

This year all first grade students are asked to complete a monthly reading
calendar. Our goal for each month is to read 20 books. This includes mini
books, guided reading books, and any other books your child reads at home. The
calendar is due at the end of each month. You do not need to write down the
names of the books, just initial the correct box when your child reads to
you. In addition, I will be sending home a pink "Read At Home" sheet. This
sheet is for the books that your child reads that are not guided reading
books. When this sheet is completed and returned, your child will earn a
free book. I have books on your child's reading level that I am happy to lend
out. Just let me know if you need books.
