Reading Calendars
In an effort to increase at home reading and overall reading performance,
all first grade teachers will be using a home reading calendar. Our class
goal each month is to read 20 books. This includes the guided reading books
that are sent home as well as any other books your child reads at home. The
calendar is due on the first school day of the following month. Just initial
in the correct box each time your child reads to you and return the completed
calendar on the due date. (If your child is reading chapter books, 10-15
minutes of reading a chapter book counts as one book.)
Guided Reading
Guided reading is one of the most crucial components of our first grade
program. This is where the teacher is able to work on reading skills with
small groups of children at each child's level. Each time your child reads a
guided reading book in school, a copy of that book is sent home for you to
practice reading for homework. The book must be returned the next day and
parents must sign the home reading record sheet.
Treasures Reading
The Treasures Reading program is a whole group comprehensive reading
program. It includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, sight words,
vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.
