TESTING:

1)     LAS Links TESTING: All ESL students take the Language Assessment System (LAS Links) tests in the spring. This includes a test for writing, reading, speaking, listening, and comprehension. The results of these tests help Mauro-Sheridan determine which students have been making Annual Yearly Progress (AYP). We hope all language students will be making progress during the year to become proficient in English.

2)     CMT TESTING: ESL students who have been in the New Haven Public School system for 10 months or less can be exempt from taking the English language portions of the CMT tests; all students, regardless of time in the New Haven school system, take science and math tests. Many CMT tests are now computer based; practice tests are offered for all ESL/Bilingual students prior to the CMTs.

3)     DISTRICT TESTING: ESL and Bilingual students are given additional time for all District testing (DCMT) in all subjects, and are permitted to have a word-to-word dictionary (in their native language) for all testing except Language Arts.

PLACEMENT: ESL and Bilingual students are tested for placement purposes by the Bilingual Examiner, Susanna Negron. Her office is in Gateway Center, 54 Meadow Street, New Haven. She can be reached for testing appointments at 203-946-2303. Parents with questions about placement, refusal of services, bilingual services, should talk to the ESL teacher.

IN SCHOOL SUPPORT: ESL and Bilingual students are provided with group and individualized support programs. These programs may be offered within a classroom setting in cooperation with the classroom teacher; some support programs are offered outside of the classroom with materials that supplement regular classroom work and homework. After school sessions can be arranged for most English Language students seeking additional help. The ESL teacher writes reports for all ESL and Bilingual students following the 1st, 2ndand 4thquarters.

ENGLISH CLASSES FOR PARENTS:There are many opportunities for parents to learn English in the New Haven area free of charge. For locations where classes are held and additional information, we recommend that parents call
