SOME GREAT BOOKS FOR BOYS:

The Adventure of Sparrowboy 1997 Simon & Schuster. (Brian Pinkney, Author) 
Ages 3-7
In this quick-moving story, a paperboy flies through the air on his bicycle 
and swoops down to do good deeds. The award-winning artwork uses comic book 
techniques to add excitement to the story.

The Mysterious Tadpole. 1977 Viking, Dutton. (Steven Kellogg, Author) Ages 3-
8 
When Louis gets a tadpole from his uncle in Scotland, he never expects it to 
outgrow a jar, much less the family's bathtub.  To keep his beloved pet, 
Louis has to come up with a place big enough to hold him. Zany pictures suit 
this popular fantasy. 

Like Jake an Me. 1984 Knof. (Mavis Jukes, Author) Ages 5-10
Alex admires his strong, cowboy-like stepfather Jake, and wishes he could be 
more like him.  To the boy's surprise, he finds out that Jake is afraid of 
something that Alex himself isn't afraid of: spiders. Beautifully written and 
illustrated with warmth and humor.


Knights of the Kitchen Table. 1991. Viking. (Jon Scieszka, Author) Ages 7-11
This lively book combines adventure, magic, slapstick humor, and droll 
illustrations to appeal to even the most reluctant readers.  Three boys use a 
magical book to travel back in time and confront a knight, a giant and a 
dragon. Readers will laugh their way through this and the other books in 
the "Time Warp Trio" series.


Stories to Solve.  1985  Greenwillow, Beechtree. (George Shannon, Author)Ages 
9-12
Few children can resist the lure of the mini-mysteries in this entertaining 
folklore book.  Each of the fourteen short stories gives the reader a puzzle 
to solve, then provides the answer on the following page.  Readers can 
stretch their minds, then pose the puzzles to thir friends.  Great fun.

Dog Friday. 1995  McElderry, Aladdin. (Hilary McKay, Author) Ages 9-12
Robin Brogan goes from being afraid of dogs, after one attacks him, to 
befriending a stray dog that he hopes to keep.  While he is waiting anxiously 
to hear if anyone claims the stray, Robin's quiet life with his mother is 
disrupted by the hilarious family who moves in next door.

JoJo's Flying Side Kick.  1995 Simon & Schuster. (Brian Pinkney Author) Ages 
4-7
In order to earn her yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do, youg JoJo must break a board 
with a flying side-kick.  With help of her family, she masters her fears and 
succeeds. A real winner.

The Adventures of Isabel. Illustrated by James Marshall 1991.(Ogden Nash 
Author) Ages 4-8
In this funny poem, Isabel conqures a bear, a witch, a giant,a doctor, and a 
nightmare.  The pictures will make children laugh while they learn to banish 
their own nightmares. Not to be missed.


The Outside Dog.Illustrated by Jennifer Plecas. 1993 Harper Collins 
(Charlotte Pomeratz Author) Ages 5-8
A charming beginning reader about a Puerto Rican girl who is determined to 
have a dog, despite her grandfather's objections.

A Ride on the Red Mare's Back. Illustrated by Julie Downing. 1992 Orchard 
(Ursula LeGuin Author) Ages5-9
With the help of a magical horse, a brave girl sets off to rescue her brother 
who has been stolen ty trolls.  A beautifully illustrated tale of courage and 
love.

Sable. Illustrated by Marcia Sewall. 1994 Henry Holt. (Karen Hesse, Author) 
Ages 6-10
More than anything, Tate wants to keep the stray dog that shows up at her 
mountain home. With persistence and hard work, the girl succeeds.  A 
heartwarming novel for younger readers.


Island of the Blue Dolphins. 1960. Houghton Mifflin (O'Dell Scott,Author) 
Ages 9-12
In this modern classic, twelve-year-old Karana must survive alone for years 
on a California island.  Winner of the Newbery Medal.
