How can I make sure my child doesn't get in trouble for not doing homework?

Your child writes down his/her daily assignments in a Homework Planner.
Instead of asking, "Did you do your homework?" I suggest saying, "Let me see
your homework planner."
Then say, "Let me see your completed homework."
This is also a great opportunity to check and see if your child is turning
in quality, fifth-grade-appropriate work. If not, INSIST that he/she
REDO the assignment immediately.

You child will quickly learn to complete all assignments on time!

REMEMBER: Your child's homework planner must be signed by YOU every night!

What are the consequences for late homework assignments?

LATE HOMEWORK POLICY:
*All late homework MUST be completed.

Parents:
* Your child's homework assignments will be recorded in his/her "homework
  planner" every day.

--PLEASE SIGN the planner every night and check that the homework is
complete.

*There are two (2) consequences for not completing homework:

1. Missed homework will affect students' grades.

Some homework assignments will count as quiz grades, and missing
these assignments may drastically lower a student's average.

2. Students that have 5 or more late assignments in a month will not
participate in the monthly reward.

Can my child get extra help after school?

If your child doesn't understand a concept being taught, he or she must
immediately ask for help IN CLASS. Mr. Thaler will find time during the
school day to explain the lesson again to your child.
Afterwards, if your child is STILL having difficulty, he or she may
request to stay after school for extra help.
Please send a note to school (AT LEAST one day in advance) asking if your
child can stay after.
**If your child did not attempt to ask for help in class first, extra help
after school will be denied.

How can I help my child become a better student?

PARENTS play a HUGE part in their child's academic motivation & success.

Take an active role by:
*READING to (or WITH) your child at home for FUN,
*INSISTING that homework is to be done BEFORE playtime. *NO* exceptions.
*CHECKING your child's homework, and having your child REDO unsatisfactory
  work immediately.
*GIVING PRAISE for good grades,
*DISPLAYING PAPERS with good grades on the wall or refrigerator,
*SITTING DOWN with your child to discuss unsatisfactory grades,
*HELPING your child study for quizzes and tests,
*ASKING what your child did in school, and SHOWING INTEREST in
his/her response.
