Homework in kindergarten is voluntary. If homework is sent home, the
purpose is to reinforce learning that is going on in school. Homework gives
you the opportunity to see what your child is doing and reinforce it in other
ways at home. Please check your child's backpack each day for important notes
or homework.
Doing homework with your child gives you the opportunity to establish
good work habits. Try to pick a particular time of day/night when you can
give your child some attention. Pick a place to do homework that has a good
work surface and good lighting. Read the directions and explain the task to
your child, but do not do it for your child. Encourage him/her to do his/her
best. Try not to put adult value judgments on your child's work. Praise your
child for a good effort and help him/her put the homework into the folder in
his/her backpack so that everything will be ready for school the next day.
Taking time to develop these sound work habits will pave the way for your
child's future schooling. Your interest and 'follow through' will tell your
child that you believe school is important and that you believe in his or her
ability to succeed.
