What can I do at home to help my child with schoolwork?

First, it is very helpful to the child if you check over his/her homework
each night and sign their planner sheet acknowledging that you are aware of
the assignments and they are completed. If your child is having difficulty
with more than two problems or examples on the homework, you should write a
note on the planner sheet or homework sheet to inform the teacher. Let the
child do the work himself/herself so the teacher can further instruct in the
area of difficulty, perhaps presenting the information in a different way.
Also, you can quiz your child on their math facts, using flash cards which
you can make or buy. I can't stress enough how important it is for your
child to have instant recall of math addition, subtraction and
multiplication facts. The tables they are responsible for mastering in
third grade are the 2's, 5's and 10's. Many students are also ready to
master the other facts 3,4,etc.
