The story of The Enormous Watermelon provided many opportunities for
learning about rhyming, listening, sequencing and retelling and vocabulary.
After reading the book, the children learned about book characters and listed
all the characters in the book. Old Mother Hubbard planted a watermelon seed
and called on Humpty Dumpty, Little Miss Muffet, Jack and Jill and Wee Willy
Winky to help pull it up because it was "enormous". The children brainstormed
other words that could have been used to say enormous. On the third day,
story cards were handed out with the pictures and names of the characters.
The other children had to put the characters in the sequence that they
appeared in the story. The children with the cards acted out the story while
the other children helped with the retelling. Naturally there were 3
dramatizations on different days so that everyone could have a turn. The
story is on tape at our listening center. Each child made a page for a class
book entitled What is Enormous?. The book is available in our book display
for rereading. We often use Big Books like The Enormous Watermelon to teach
and develop reading skills.
