About The Teacher

Mr. Keen grew up in Darien and actually went to Middlesex himself as a
student. His children are the fourth generation of Keens in
Darien. He developed a passion for outdoor adventure and travel
early in life. His travel has taken him to over 100 nations in six
continents and all 50 U.S. states. He is a member of the Travelers'
Century Club, an organization open to people who have visited more than 100
nations. His interest in other cultures led him to a career in social
studies. He enjoys sharing his experiences abroad with his classes. He and
his family travel at every opportunity.

Each year Mr. Keen leads trips abroad for young people and their parents. It
should be noted that these trips are not connected to the Darien School
System. If you want further information you can email him at
frankkeen@aol.com.

In 2001 Mr. Keen was selected by the Connecticut Association of
Schools as "Middle School Teacher if the Year."

Teaching runs in the family. Mr. Keen's wife, Sally Knowlton-Keen is also a
teacher in town. She teaches art at Hindley Elementary School. The Keens
live in Darien and have two daughters: Adrienne, age 25 and Marisa, age 21.
Both graduated from DHS. Adrienne is a 4th grade teacher in Philadelphia and
Marisa is studying to become a Spanish teacher. Mr. Keen's father also
taught at Middlesex, retiring about twenty years ago.

Mission For The Class

Mr. Keen's mission is to make the study of cultures around the world
as interesting for his students as it is for himself. He is
dedicated to helping students improve their skills, broaden their
knowledge, and enjoy school at the same time. He strives to help
each student feel comfortable in school and good about themselves.
Over the years Mr. Keen has become more impressed with how
cooperative the students at MMS are and how hard they work. He feels
fortunate to teach at Middlesex.
