Why do students go see their counselor?
-to get help with a schedule, study skills, friend problems, school problems,
or anything that might be bothering them
-to say hello and tell us what's new and exciting
I'm new- do you have any suggestions for me on how to make friends?
Absolutely- my first piece of advice is to get involved. While most people
are very nice, not everyone goes out of their way to welcome new people- they
might be shy, too. Approach people in a positive way- make a positive remark
about what they're wearing or what you know they are involved in- especially
if you have something in common- for example a sport, pets, horseback riding,
a favorite sports team, Student Council, etc.
Another good idea is to join the Intramural sports teams here at MMS. You
don't have to be an expert player, many students come out for it and everyone
gets a chance to play (sign-ups are with your PE teachers). It's a nice way
to meet people who aren't in your classes, yet might have something in common
with you.
And lastly, don't be afraid to come see me or a teacher for more hints and
tips. Let us know what you've tried and we'll help you to problem solve.
It's not easy being new to a school, but you have what it takes to make
friends. Sometimes it just takes time and a little bit of problem-solving.
Please don't be afraid to ask for help.
