8TH GRADE FAMILY LIFE

The eighth grade Family Life program covers basic information on human
reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. Classes
are planned and taught by Mrs. Maroney or Mrs. Malecki, Middlesex school
nurses, and Mrs. Gail Hannigan, who holds tri-certifications in Health
Education, Family and Consumer Sciences and Special Education. Prior to
theses classes, the topics of self-esteem and assertiveness are reviewed, and
students are repeatedly encouraged to think about plans they have for the
future and how every behavior has a consequence.

Class discussion rules are strictly enforced, and no slang terms are used.

Parents with questions about the program are encouraged to call Mrs. Maroney,
Mrs. Malecki or Mrs. Hannigan.

Classes for the fourth quarter will begin on December 19, 2008.
Class discussion rules are strictly enforced, and no slang terms are
used.

7TH GRADE DRUG RESEARCH PROJECT
Seventh grade students are randomly assigned one of the following categories
of drugs to research:

Alcohol
Anabolic Steroids
Cocaine
Depressants
Hallucinogens
Inhalants
Marijuana
Narcotics/Opiates
Stimulants
Tobacco
Club Drugs
   Ecstasy
   Ketamine

Students rearch on the websites listed under "links", and report to the class
the drugs included in the assigned category, what the drug looks like, slang
names (no one is ever going to offer them methylenedioxymethamphetamine!),
misinformation (that might persuade someone to use), true health effects, who
uses and why, where it is made (pharmaceutical lab, amateur lab, etc) whether
it has a medical use, and its legal status.

Prior to the research project general drug terms are defined and discussed.

If there are any questions you have regarding any aspect of this class,
please feel free to call Mrs. Hannigan at extension 3222.
