Character Comparison Collage for The Outsiders

What a book! Now it’s your chance to display what you learned from these complex characters. You
will create a collage comparing two characters (of your choice) and focus on their growth (or lack of
growth) throughout the book. Your goal is to highlight the unique qualities of each character.

What You Need:

1.	Two 8X11 pieces of colored paper.
2.	Markers/colored pencils/ glue sticks
3.	Magazines/Newspapers
4.	Odds and Ends to make each collage come to life- photos, ribbon, cloth, badges, etc. that help
reveal information about your character.
5.	A typed explanation of your collage.

What to Include in Your Collage:

1.	Choose two characters to display.
2.	Quotes from each character from the beginning of the book.
3. Quotes from each character from the end of the book.
4.	Visuals that best represent the main conflict of each character
5.	One unique symbol that best represents each character.
6. A six-word memoir for each character.
7. Visuals that represent the setting of the book. (Highlight the setting that is most significant to
the individual character.)

Remember:

1.	As you work on each section, think closely about what you want to show about the character.
On the back of the page, include a typed explanation of what you created and why. You need to
explain your thinking behind each visual representation.
2. Your collage should be visually appealing. Do not leave any space, fill it up with visuals, words,
symbols, quotes, anything that completes the essence of each character.
3. Do not repeat any quotes, visuals, words. Each character must be unique.

Due on Friday! Make sure you are ready to present it to the class. Bring any and all supplies to class
since you will have plenty of class time to work on the project.

                                              CHANGING YOUR IDENTITY? WHAT
DOES THIS MEAN?

WE ALL AGREE THAT A PERSON’S IDENTITY IS WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE, DISTINCT,
AND
DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE. IDENTITY IS MADE UP OF MANY FACTORS FROM
PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE TO FAMILY STRUCTURE TO PERSONAL BELIEFS AND IDEAS. NOW IT’S TIME
TO BECOEM
A GREEK ‘CHARACTER’ AND ADOPT HIS/HER POINT OF VIEW. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
BECOMING
AN EXPERT ON THIS ‘CHARACTER’ BY CONDUCTING RESEARCH, WRITING A LIFE STORY
(AUTOBIOGRAPHY) FROM HIS/HER POINT OF VIEW, AND DRESSING THE PART FOR OUR
GREEK
CELEBRATION.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS:
o	8 ENTRIES MINIMUM WITH VISUAL/IMAGE FOR EACH ENTRY.
o	4 VISUALS/IMAGES HAND DRAWN.

TAKE HOME TEST FOR THE MISFITS:

You will answer the questions each night and hand in the take home test on
Thursday, April 2nd.
Each question requires you to make reference to the book, so make sure your
book is next to you
while you complete the test. You will hand in your book on Thursday. You
will choose a total of four
responses and post them at jackiekelly1.wordpress.com. In addition, you will
have to read other
students’ responses and share your opinion of one by Weds. night at 9pm.
Each response must
be a well-rounded paragraph = 5/6 sentences. This is your last project for
the quarter. ☺
Must be typed, 14 font,

Monday:

1.	Which character in the book could you become friends with and why?

2.	Does The Misfits portray a realistic portrayal of life in middle
school? Why/Why not? How is MMS
similar and/or different?

3.	Why do you think James Howe, the author of The Misfits, chose the
character of Bobby
Goodspeed to tell the story? Why do you think he chose the name ‘Bobby
Goodspeed’? Could any
other character narrate the story instead of Bobby? Why or why not?

Tuesday:

    1. Extract the one most important line in the book. Explain your
        choice and its significance.

2.	Analyze the role of conflict in the book. If a person has difficulty
in his/her life and this person
chooses NOT to fight and change his inner self, this is referred to as
Man/Woman vs.
Himself/Herself. Explore man vs. himself and choose one character who
struggles throughout the
book.
Explain why this character remains static and analyze his/her lack of change.
3. Find an example of a cause and effect relationship in the book
where the terms ‘antagonist’
and ‘protagonist’ apply. Explain the situation.

Wednesday:

1.	Mr. Kellerman makes the comment that “we’re all so ready to believe
the worst about
ourselves……we just accept them without even thinking about what they mean or
even if they’re
true.” Find an example in the book that supports his statement. Based on
your experience, do you
agree or disagree with him?

2.	Analyze the protagonists and the antagonists in the book. With the
exception of Bobby, choose
one character who shows significant growth. In what ways does s/he grow?
Analyze this character
at various points in the story to prove your point. Use dialogue to make
your point.

3. Create a new cover for the book. Use symbols to represent the themes
of the book. Incorporate
two themes into the book without writing what they are. Think about the
title and the placement of
the title. Be creative!!!!!! Choose the colors that best fit for the mood
you are creating. You may
write this out with your own handwriting and drawing or you may use the
computer. There must be a
visual Must be done on 8x11 sheet of paper.
