SCIENCE
The eighth grade science program focuses on the study of physical science.
The eighth grade science benchmarks are:
INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY--- matter, changes, reaction
Name, describe, and classify the properties of matter.
Describe particle behavior and the differences between states of matter.
Identify, describe and classify elements according to their properties.
Predict and describe the properties of the elements in the groups of the
periodic table.
Compare and contrast the differences between elements, compound and
mixtures.
Explain how the modern atomic theory developed.
Apply the atomic theory to determine the particles inside an atom.
Use the periodic table to explain trends among the elements
Explain how the three main types of chemical bonds form
INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICS--- gravity, friction, laws of motion
Give examples and compare different types of forces.
Demonstrate types of friction and how it affects motion.
Define and state the Universal Law of Gravitation.
Compare and contrast mass and weight.
State and apply Newton’s Laws of Motion.
State and apply the Law of Conservation of Momentum and calculate the
Momentum of different objects. Conversion, Conservation and Transfer of
Energy—heat, light, sound, & nuclear energy
Compare and contrast different types of energy.
Describe and give examples of energy conversion.
Recognize how energy is transferred throughout the biosphere.
Explain and apply the law of conservation of energy.
