Welcome Back Parents,
To celebrate Earth Day this week and preparing for Mother’s Day in the upcoming week, we will need your child to bring in an old pair of sneakers (child or adult size) for a surprise project.
This Wednesday morning our class will be headed to the Scholastic Book Fair @ 8:45, if you would like them to purchase a book, send money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it.
The homework journal has changed to reflect your child’s reading skill and abilities. For the next 8 weeks, I wanted to focus on the skill of retelling a story in sequence, using the characters names, stating the story problem and how it was solved. Your child will be familiar with the new journal page that allows them to illustrate beginning, middle, end of a story and then retelling the story in sequence to someone.
Finally, we have only one Mystery Reader slot available on Friday May 4th. Please let me know if you are available to participate!

September 12th, 2011
Dear Parents,
Within a few short days of schools, we have established many routines and classroom rules. Your children already seem very comfortable and happy. We are off to a great start and I know our year will be successful.
Classroom community is my main goal for the next month of school. Students getting to know each other’s names, teaching problem solving techniques both socially and academically, and constantly modeling oral language for all students. It is my core belief that when students feel comfortable and relax within their environment, they will gain more confidence and take on more risks with their academic thinking.
Next week students will continue to participate in Morning Meeting, become acquainted with letter sounds, along with word and rhyme awareness as well as learning routines for Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop.
In Math we have discovered and are learning the names of all the Pattern Block shapes, participating in calendar math and graphing weather conditions. We look forward to multisensory counting and creating “AB” patterns using unifies blocks.
September Events to watch out for …….

September 6, 2011
Dear Parents,
We all had a great first full day of Kindergarten. We had P.E. in the morning and Art after lunch. We sang the alphabet and read books.
Throughout the rest of the week we look forward to participating in a walking tour through the building, practicing for fire drills and writing our Hopes and Dreams for this year.
Here are a few Reminders for you….
Take Home Folders- Please look in them every day and take out the contents. Your child must bring them back to school each day as it will be used as our daily tool for communication.
Extra Clothes- If you had not done so please send in a change of clothes in a zip lock bag to leave at school so your child can easily use them if needed.
Bus Tags- Must be worn everyday regardless of your child is a parent pickup/ bus / or after school program. They must be returned each day to school.
Thank you for helping to make our Kindergarten Orientation and first full day a great success!
Welcome to Kindergarten!!!! September 2011

We do lots of fun and exciting things in Kindergarten; it is a wonderful place to be! You will meet many new friends and maybe some old ones too.
On the first day of school, Thursday September 1st, please bring in one favorite thing that you would like to show your new friends and that will keep you company.
I hope you have been enjoying the summer and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday August 31st for Kindergarten Orientation.
See you soon!
Ms. Metcalf
P.S. For the first day of school (September 1st) Please bring in a healthy mid morning snack, a lunch and a small beach towel or blanket for rest.
August, 2011
Dear Parents or Guardians,
I am excited to meet you and play an important role in your child’s education. Before we begin please let me know immediately if your child has any food/seasonal or medical allergies I need to be aware of before the school year begins. Our classroom will be a Peanut Free room for the year and I will share more details as to what that will look like in our classroom throughout the year, during Kindergarten Orientation.
Listed below are a few items of information that will be very helpful to you in the weeks and months ahead.
1. Lunch- Your child needs a lunch everyday. Your child may bring lunch from home or purchase lunch at the cafeteria for $2.85 . They may also purchase milk only for $0.50 (WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND HAVING YOUR CHILD BRING LUNCH FROM HOME THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF SCHOOL UNTIL THEY GET USE TO THE CAFETERIA) We will eat lunch everyday @ 12:00-12:30pm.
2. Snack Everyday- Please provide your child with a healthy snack and drink daily. We have snack early in the morning. I encourage nutrition so please send in items of fruit, vegetables and crackers, etc… NO CANDY! We will have an afternoon community (Peanut free) snack for all students. See attached list.
3. BUS TAGS – EACH CHILD WILL RECEIVE A BUS TAG ON ORIENTATION DAY. THEY WILL NEED TO WEAR THIS BUS TAG TO AND FROM SCHOOL EACH DAY THROUGHTOUT THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER/ OCTOBER/NOVEMBER. THIS BUS TAG ALLOWS NORTHEAST STAFF, BUS DRIVERS AND ASSISTANTS, TO HELP GUIDE YOUR CHILD’S ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TO AND FROM THE CLASSROOM SAFELY!!!!
4. Daily Dismissal- Parent pick up will be held downstairs in the Gymnasium at around 2:25ish p.m. Students will be escorted downstairs with Kindergarten Assistants. Students going home on the bus will be dismissed from the auditorium to help them become acquainted with dismissal procedure. All Kindergarten teachers will be there to assist this process. This will continue until November.
****** VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE***********
Anytime your child has to change his/her usual way home…. The school requires a written note. If a note is not given to me, your child will be sent home the usual way. Calling the main office for sudden dismissal changes or for forgotten written notes is also another way to change your child’s dismissal plans. This is a safety precaution for your child! Your co-operation in this matter is imperative. I thank you in advance.
5. EXTRA CLOTHES- Please send in a bag of extra clothes label in a ziplock bag to store in their cubby in case your child needs to change throughout the day.
6. Sneakers- Gym days will be on Tuesday & Wednesday. Your child must wear sneakers in order to participate in the activities. Please bring an oversize t-shirt to keep in class for Art class on Tuesday.
7. Label -Please put your child’s name on everything! Many children do not recognize items that belong to them. It is helpful if lunchboxes, rest towels and sweaters/ jackets all arrive to school marked!!!
8. Rest time- Since Kindergarten is a full day we will have a short rest period daily. Your child will need a small beach towel to put on the floor to rest on. They will be sent home for washing often. Please no thick blankets or sleeping bags!!! They will be returned home with your child.
9. Backpack- Provide your child with some type of book bag and folder. Each day your child will come to school and bring home their “take home” folder. It will be a tool for us to transport teacher/ parent’s notes, school notices, homework and projects. Please check it daily at home as we will each morning in the classroom.
10. Birthdays – if you would like your child to share this celebration with the class we welcome the opportunity. Cupcakes, ice pops, or cookies are all small items children can easily handle.(no candles or balloons please)
11. School Supplies- Kindergarten supply list has already been sent out to you through the mail. Besides the items listed for your child…i.e. crayons, scissors, markers, folder, we have little space to store other household items such as glue/soap & paper towels within the classroom. Please hold off sending in these items with your child until we have an urgent need for them. However we are immediate need of glue sticks, antibacterial/ Clorox Wipes, Dixie cups, tissue boxes and Peanut free snacks for the afternoon. Attached is a list of Peanut free Products which will be safe for all children to enjoy.
Thanks so much for your help and co-operation with the above mentioned items. I look forward to a wonderful school year with both you and your child! Enjoy the rest of the summer and I will see you soon!
