BIG THANKS
First of all, I want to thank all of the parents for giving me such a warm and generous send off to Motherhood.
Reading is Fundamental
This month in Reading the children will work on author studies. They will choose an author and read several books written by the same author. They will compare and contrast the stories. They will retell the stories and then choose their favorite story to recommend to their peers.
Please continue to have your child read everyday for at least 20 minutes. This will help him or her retain all of the reading skills we are working on in school. Help them choose a variety of books and include a non-fiction text. Have your child retell the story to you using details from the text. Ask your child questions about why the author wrote this book and check to see if your child is understanding what he or she reads. Even basic comprehension questions are helpful to ask your child after reading. Listen to your child read when possible and remind them not to add in extra words.
EVERYDAY MATH
This month the children will focus on place value.
The children will continue to practice telling time- an hour before a given time and an hour after a time. They will practice creating amounts using different coins, making change and solving word problems, as well as adding and subtracting double digit numbers.
They will continue to practice multiplication using arrays.
WRITER'S WORKSHOP
This month the children will learn how to write letters. They will learn about the differences between a friendly letter verses a business letter. The children will learn about the important parts of a letter and what must be included. Then the children will practice writing letters.
VOCABULARY
The students have studied all of the vocabulary words for the year. At this point they will start reviewing the words to be sure they remember the meanings.
Phonics/Spelling
T
he children will continue to work on a spelling skill each week. They recently studied possessives. This week the children are learning about contractions.
Science/ Social Studies
In Science this month the children will learn about aquatic life and how it relates to the Long Island Sound. This unit will connect to our trip to Soundwaters.
Love,
Mrs. Casolo
