READING: 25 minutes every night. Reading Log to be filled out and signed. More info below.
DAILY READING/READING LOGS
Students are expected to read every day. Intially we will use a Reading Log for them to use nightly
and later in the year we will move on to a Reading Contract that will be filled out monthly. Students
should fill in ALL of the information about the book they are reading. Parents are expected to check
this information and intitial the Reading Log every night.
Daily Reading
- Read each night - including the weekends!!
- Parent/guardian must sign-off on Reading Logs each week.
- Completed and signed Reading Logs are due every Monday.
- Reading Logs are part of their Reading grade.
- Late logs are marked as a missing assignment.
Students who are not handing in their Weekly Reading Logs will be given an alternative homework
assignment to do that will go along with their nightly reading. This nightly assignment must be
handed in the next day. We will continue with this process until students are able to hand in their
Weekly Reading Logs on time and completely filled out.
Nightly reading represents a big chunk of weekly homework. Please monitor your child's reading and
make sure that they are filling in their log nightly. I collect them on Mondays, log their minutes, and
include this as part of their Reading grade.
ASSIGNMENT PADS
I will start the year looking at everyone's Assignment Pads but will move towards student
independence and expect them to become responsible for their work without having to check in
every day.
Parents will be asked to sign their student's Assignment Pad nightly to ensure that students are
completing their required homework. Students will also bring home a Missing Assignment note that
must be signed by the parent and returned to school. If you are receiving these notes it is a sign that
your child may need some additional support with organizing and collecting work at home.
Please identify a quiet place at home with no distractions and set up a regular time for your child to
work on schoolwork.
I also recommend setting aside a regular time for reading. This can be time that you read with your
child, that they read on their own, or that they read to you.
Students are responsible for bringing home books and handouts necessary for homework and
returning it to school by the due date. Students should be able to contact at least one other
classmate in D11 to get assignment information from.
I review who is missing assignments daily. Students are given a Missing Assignment note that must
be signed by a parent and returned to school with the missing work. Sometimes I may give them
additional time to hand in a missing assignment but most times we will be working on this in class
the next day.
Points will be taken off of late/missing assignments.
LATE/MISSING ASSIGNMENTS WILL AFFECT THEIR GRADES.
BOOK CLUB
Students self-select a book that they would like to read with at least two other people. Books may be
chosen from the classroom library, the school library, or students can arrange together to get them
from the Milford Public Library or to purchase them at a book store.
Classroom books are signed out and students are expected to return them in the condition in which
they got them. If books are lost or damaged, students will be expected to replace them.
Students set their own reading goals and then work on one Book Club job at a time. Each job has a
job sheet that outlines the work expectations. Students then discuss what they have read and
present their work to each other, grading each other on their efforts using a Book Club Rubric.
Rubrics and job sheets are handed in to me and I will give a grade. Students meet to set their next
reading goal, pick their next job, and the cycle continues.
This reading can count towards their nightly reading. Ask them about the book they are currently
reading!
