April/May
What’s been going on in our classroom?
• In shared reading, we have been learning about the various nonfiction text
features such as table of contents, diagrams, glossary, etc. and the
nonfiction text structures such as main/details, sequence and
compare/contrast. We have also been working on using various strategies to
complete cloze exercises (fill in the blank) to prepare for our cloze text
coming up in the next month or so. Next week, we will begin to learn about
summarizing a text.
• In social studies, we recently finished a unit on the Environment. You have
hopefully seen the bird houses made from recycled cardboard that the children
painted (hopefully they didn’t peel too much!). The children also decorated
brown bags in celebration of Earth Day. Some bags from our class were
displayed in Stop and Shop on Earth Day this past week. Also, we are
finishing up a unit on the continents and oceans in social studies. The
children are working in groups to create a continent poster. Next, we will
learn more about Global Awareness.
• In writing, we have really been focusing on using strong words, synonyms for
sleeping words, stretching our main event with details, showing-not telling,
adding description and making our stories come to life. Next week, the
children will complete a district-wide writing prompt on a personal narrative.
After that, we will take a short break from story writing and work on reading
and writing poetry. Save the date for a Poetry and Popcorn party in B8 on May
29th (in celebration of poetry month which is April- better late than never!).
• In science, we will soon begin a unit on Butterflies and Caterpillars. The
children will learn all about the lifecycle of a butterfly by raising
caterpillars and seeing their transformation into adult life- butterflies!
• In math, we have finished up the important chapters on time and money.
These are skills that can easily be applied to real-life situations. Please
take any opportunity to build upon these skills at home or while at the
stores. We are currently learning about fractions and will begin measurement
in the next week.
• The Milford public librarian came in to visit our classroom last week. She
stressed the importance of getting your child a library card and visiting as
often as you can, especially over the summer!
• We will be doing one more Scholastic book order this year to avoid cutting
too close to the end of the year. The May order will be due on Tuesday May
6th. Please place your last orders by this date.
• The second graders have one field trip left this year. We will be going to
the Orange fairgrounds to learn about other cultures (social studies
topics-global awareness) and will have lunch there. I will need several
chaperones, so if you are available on May 21st, please let me know. The
permission slips will be coming home soon.
• This is your last call for parent readers! If you haven’t had an
opportunity to read to the class, let me know. There aren’t many Fridays left
in the year!
