Homework

Homework Policy

I would like to share my homework policy with you. In my classroom,
homework will primarily be viewed as an extension of the learning day. It
is given to extend, strengthen and reinforce materials being taught in the
classroom. Homework encourages students to develop a personal
commitment to academic work. It also encourages responsibility and
teaches good work habits and study skills.

The parent’s role in this is to guide and to offer assistance and
direction when necessary. However, the child should assume
responsibility for his/her own work. Short homework assignments will
be given approximately four times per week. They can be found on the
homework chart in your child’s take-home folder. This chart should be
signed so you can make yourself aware of the assignments given. All
homework is due the following day unless otherwise
noted. If a child does not complete an assignment, he or she will be
given the option to bring it in the following day. If this problem persists,
the child will have to complete it at recess.

I would also like to inform you of the Star Reader program. Studies in
education consistently show that good readers most often come from
families who enjoy books and read together. Many of you already do
spend time reading with your child. I am encouraging children and their
families to make a special effort at home. You can share the joy of
reading and enrich your lives through literature. In order to participate in
this program, I am asking you and your child to read together for at least
ten minutes each night. Your child will need to fill in the Star Reader
Sheet for every day of reading. This sheet will be kept in your child’s take
home homework folder which I will check every two weeks. If you have a
problem getting books for your child to read, please let me know. It is
also a great idea to get your child a Milford library card!

I hope that you will enjoy this special time with your child and I know
that you will see positive results. This experience is a good opportunity
to demonstrate to your child that reading has an important place in the
adult world as well as in your child’s school life. I look forward to
seeing an increased interest in reading and homework! This homework
policy will continue throughout the school year and hopefully, it will
become an important part of your child’s daily routine! Thank you for your
support and assistance with this policy.
