Learning Centers

During our literacy hour each day, the children do a literature extension assignment. When they
finish this activy, they go to one of the learning centers in our classroom.

Here are some of examples of the learning centers in Room A-10. (under
construction)
Read the Room- The children use pointers and "reading glasses" to read our
poetry and song charts, bulletin boards, and books in the room.

Write the Room (also called Clipboard Cruising)- Children walk around the
room, copying favorite words or searching for words that contain a given
phonic element.

Word Family Center- Children build word families on poster charts

Spelling Center- Children practice spelling words from the current week or
previous week, using letter stamps, letter magnets and dry erase boards.

Handwriting Center-Children practice penmanship on our letter charts.

Computers- The children may complete an addition session of Success Maker
Enterprise and/or Lexia learning programs. They may also use learning software- such as Jump Start
First Grade, My Own Stories, Bailey's Book House, Word Muncers, Kid Pix, Sammy's Science House and
Millie's Math House.

their own beautiful artwork.

Science Center- The children investigate with science materials, often related
to our theme in class. Some activities may include: magnets, big screen
microscope, observing and classifying.

Math tubs- We have a variety of math activities in tubs that the children can
use. Some activities include pattern block puzzles, geoboard games, numeral
writing, addition/subtraction practice, etc.

File folder games-These matching games build skills that we are working on in
class. Some activities include: ABC order, phonics games, sight word
practice, math facts practice, etc.

Sight Word Center- Children review sight words using sight word stamps,
magnetic letters, and dry erase boards
